Though not heavily into photography this camera does all the basics well, and also has loads of functionality I am using to teach myself more about the art. From full auto to full manual it really gives me all the options I had while learning on aa film SLR, but with the added benefit of being able to see the differences in changing aperture, speed, exposure, ISO etc (end being able to delete the bad ones I take pretty frequently). My only gripe is the zoom is a bit limited compared to newer cameras (only 4x optical), however otherwise perfect for learning and everyday use.

This is only my second digital camera the last one seemed very complicated.Well my Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W17 came from Amazon last week and all I can say is wow what a beauty so easy to understand and use, as a 62year young lady pensioner I can honestly say I'd never go back to a film type camera. I got some superb macro shots in my garden of bees on flowers I would recomend this camera to anyone especially an amature who likes realy crisp pin sharp pictures. When I printed them in A4 size they looked like pictures you see in wild life magazine absolutely perfect. Thank you Sony

I have to repeat what the other comments have said about this camera. Despite producing some nice results and being user friendly, the camera has seized up after one year of use, just after the guarantee expired I note. Prior to this, battery life gradually slowed down after each use and eventually it would not switch on at all. I will not be buying nikon products again.

i have one of these, and like several of the other ppl here, i have had the same problems with image quility, its usless in low light, the auto focus has major problems in low light settings (you have to take 3-4 pics to make sure) even with the AF assist light on. but you do get great well lit outdoor images from it. the videos are very nice and in focus, shame about normal pics, good sound qulity but the video feature is a one button press, and i have found myself pressing it alot by accident if i hold it in one hand, very annoying but i thankfully have a 8gb sd card. the outside of the camera, its looks and features are LOVELY, shame realy that its not just around for its design aspects. i have a old cannon ixus 500 ... I bought this camera a couple of years ago from Amazon after using a similar model at work and being very impressed. It's a good quality easy little camera which produces quality snaps and is so useful for all those occasions you want something automatic and light to hand. Build quality is good and there are plently of functions and modes for the average family user. I would like to warn others that a week ago ours started playing up - the lens would not set, it zoomed in and out, it clicked constantly and the camera would not turn off. Eventually it gave a lens error message. I took it to my local dealer who took a very brief look at it and suggested it would cost a minimum of £85 to repair.
