Without a doubt the worst camera I have ever owned. It's been back to Nikon three times now and every time it is returned with additional faults. Nikon made good 35mm cameras but don't appear to have cracked the digital market.

My previous camera, a Pentax Optio E10, was stolen when we were on holiday on the Costa del Sol in June, so once home and Insurance sorted I spent what seemed like hours and hours looking at digital cameras and the reviews submitted. I evenutally decided on the Canon Powershot A580 and I am really glad I did. Purchased online from Amazon.co.uk and delivered within two days along with a 2GB memory disk and carrier pouch. My main worry initially was the batteries. My first camera, a Nikon Coolpix 2100 was horrendous, good little camera but seemed to go through batteries(rechargeables) very very fast and was very frustrating. This isn't the slimmest or tiniest compact digital camera, but it's still easily pocketable (jacket, not shirt!) and for the price, produces great pics in a compact form. The screen is a good size and nice and bright and the extra bit on the zoom makes a difference - most of the competition stops at 3x. The colour choice allows a bit of personalisation. There are an amazing number of presets, but you won't need most of them, and the most important ones are the most accessible. Anyone unused to digital cameras or who is a bit of a technophobe upgrading might find the menus a bit of a fiddle, but for most purposes, they won't be used much. Ok so I'm not a tecky, I just want something that will give great pics and be easy to use straight out of the box and this camera does just that. The instructions are almost intuitive and the on-screen display reminds you what part of the menu you are looking at. The software is even easier to use - someone went to a lot of trouble to make it this simple. Outdoor pics are comprehensively catered for.Only one slight reservation is flash photography but any camera of this size is unlikey to have the power to illuminate middle distance objects. In terms of value for money I shopped around on Amazon a found a stunning deal. 100% recommended, even my missus likes it 'because it just takes brilliant photos'.

Caplio R7- Purchased in March 2008. Inside 2 days lens started jamming. Returned & repaired - took 1 month. Since then I have had 3 replacements all for the same fault - camera cannot focus and shutsdown! Each time I was without the camera for 4 to 6 weeks. Wouldn't buy another Ricoh.

I paid Amazon £119.99 for this camera, with a Lowepro Ridge 20 case [worth £8.99] added "free" [it fits in ok] The 24 mm wide-angle lens is great - less distortion than expected and barely noticable vignetting in blue-sky pics. The organic LED screen is much brighter than a normal screen and the 2-year Samsung warranty is reassuring. Even though I've used fully-manual SLR's in the past, I've never attempted anything except "Auto" with a digital camera until this easy-to-use "Smart-Touch" interface. As you move from "Auto" to "Program" to "Manual" you can SEE by the buttons what extra factors you can control, brilliant! cnet uk have reviewed this camera and it's their 2nd highest-rated compact [It was beaten by a camera costing £80 more - as of Oct 2008] ...
