I just recieved mine today and first impressions is that it is an attractive camera. The pictures are clear. But the camera itself is quite difficult to use as theres so many functions. Not having a black and white setting is a bit of a let down but you can easily download picasa 2 on google n edit your images on there. Its small enough to fit in your pocket or bag and is great for taking pictures with your friends. i suggest buying a 2GB memory card for it as they are so cheap now. Its a really good buy and an excellent value for money, when i told everyone how cheap it wsa they were astonished. I use a DSLR (20D and 40D) for 'serious' photographic opportunities (foreign travel, shows etc) but for just about everything else I use a compact for the portability. I want manual control of my camera so I've been using a Canon S80 for the last 3 years and to good effect but when the G10 was announced I became interested, primarily after seeing the sample images that Canon provided but also because it has a 28mm lens and I use wide angle more then telephoto. I wanted to buy a camera that would take AA batteries rather than come with rechargeable batteries for 2 reasons. Firstly rechargeable batteries loose their capacity over time & secondly when I go on holiday I dont want to take the charger with me which adds weight. With AA batteries you have the option of buying disposable batteries & just throw them away after using them thus saving you weight on holiday. The camera itself is very good. Size wise its not the slimmest but for the price its very good. You get 7.1MP for around £70 (what I bought it for from Amazon) The supplied memory card is only 32MB but thats to be expected with any camera you buy. I have just bought this camera and it is living up to expectations after upgrading from my IXUS 800. It has a great 3 inch screen, good optics and good picture results, excellent quality feel about it, quick to take and review images, useful 4x zoom and the control layout has been improved so it is as about as easy to use as it could be. It may not have the HD video capabilities of some others bit this camera's claim to fame is that it does what is says better than most other camera- Great photos, easy to use and a great screen for reviewing. I have bought a screen protector though as it would be a shame to damage the screen as it is so nice!

There are reports all over the net that the lens will have a fault within a year of purchase and Canon will not be interested in your problem. It has happened to me after just 9 months! The lens won't open and displays a,"Lens error,restart camera",message.It won't restart. Canon don't care! This is a generic problem with Canon cameras. BUYER BEWARE!

The camera has a very wide range of settings which can be used by the experienced or semi pro photographer in situations where a DSLR is unrealistic due to bulk and weight etc. It also has a range of semi and fully automatic settings which the beginner can use constantly and still get top class results. Remember, the camera features the IS (image stabilisation) system, and Canon's is widely acclaimed to be the best. (Helps to prevent blur in shots where a slower shutter speed, and/or telephoto is being used).
