Decided to upgrade my wonderful eod400d and lenses. After reading quite a lot about it, I had decided against the 450d and would go for the 40d instead. However, after reading about this camera, I could not resist..... it was quite a lot more, but decided that I could buy this one and not need another camera for many years. If you do not already have good lenses, the starter kit with the 17-85 USM IS lens, good value combination. Only disadvantages compared to a lesser lens and the 400d is the size and weight, however feels much more stable and well built. Now down the the picture quality...... all I can say is AMAZING! Even in low light (a common eos flaw) this camera took great shots without the flash, crystal clear..... only had it a day ... Read More:

First off, let me say I also have a Canon 5d and wanted a happy snappy to capture some family video and take those all important shots that you can only get when you don't carry around a large camera. For the price you are getting an awfull lot of technology and an extremely flexible camera wrapped up in an amazingly small package. Once you get over all the bells and whistles the photos are no better than many happy snappies but then I figure if you go for something with a tiny little lens (no matter how many pixels) you're not going to get professional results. There seems to be a lot of problem with noise above 400 and focussing can be a little slow sometimes. I was dissapointed with the video in that the hightest quality video ... Read More:

Bought this from another source, initially I was going to buy the Canon Ixus 80, which I bought for my wife last week! After a discussion with a friend who knows about the lens went for this. Great little camera & simple to use. Still exploring all the possible functions but so far so good. Love the quality of the colour & the zooming capability is excellent with amazing clarity.

My previous camera, a Pentax Optio E10, was stolen when we were on holiday on the Costa del Sol in June, so once home and Insurance sorted I spent what seemed like hours and hours looking at digital cameras and the reviews submitted. I evenutally decided on the Canon Powershot A580 and I am really glad I did. Purchased online from Amazon.co.uk and delivered within two days along with a 2GB memory disk and carrier pouch. My main worry initially was the batteries. My first camera, a Nikon Coolpix 2100 was horrendous, good little camera but seemed to go through batteries(rechargeables) very very fast and was very frustrating. The other reviews accurately set out all the good points. I am balancing the scales with some of the problems I experienced with my Canon 5D which are replicated with the Canon 40D and why I sold my Canon and bought a Sony A700: 1. Weight - it is pretty heavy for a non-pro camera. With a decent lens this is not the sort of camera you will be grateful for carrying around all day in the tropics on holiday! The A700 is a couple of hundred grams lighter which makes a difference. 2. Ergonomics - this is a personal matter and for me very important. Most modern cameras are capable of taking a nice picture whether it's a Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax, Olympus etc. It's how it feels in the hand and in use that really matters. This has ... Read More:

I am pleased with the camera itself but didn't appreciate that delivery was from the Netherlands. As such, the instructions, which appear comprehensive, come in 4 languages but none of them are English. In addition, the battery charger power lead comes with a european pin plug. A UK plug was enclosed but you either need to change the plug yourself or use an adaptor. None of this was apparent when I ordered the camera and whilst not a serious problem, it was certainly frustrating.
