I use a DSLR (20D and 40D) for 'serious' photographic opportunities (foreign travel, shows etc) but for just about everything else I use a compact for the portability. I've owned my Canon 1000D for about 3 weeks now and have given it a reasonable test drive. The one thing that strikes me most is the ease at which I can find my way around the camera instantly to find the correct settings (very intuitive). The Camera noise is non-exsistant at ISO 800 and ISO 1600,(outstanding). The EOS 1000D is very similar in shape and style to the 450D, it even shares the exact same "LIVE VIEW" technology, all the button's are the same, layout the same, just the 1000D sports a 10mp Sensor and the 450D a 12mp Sensor. Ive just started A level photography and decided to buy a good camera. Stright away I thought of Cannon as they have a good reputation. I brought the Cannon 450D. After about 5 days it was just not what I was looking for, the live view wasent amazing and the standard lens was not good enough for the price I paid. I decided to go for the Sony a350. WOW what a differance, the live view was fantastic. The standard lens was great and the 14MP made alot of differance when zoomed in. I bought the camera mainly because of its waterproof feature as I was going to be doing a lot of snorkeling on holiday. I took some amazing underwater photos and was truly impressed until day 12 of the holiday when it stopped working. An error message reported that the card slot cover wasn't closed properly, when it was most definitely was. After a few hours of this it completely died which was really annoying. I did a bit of research when we got home and it appears that a few of the Olympus models have this problem - something to do with the cover sensors. Knowing this I opted for a refund rather than a replacement - which is another good reason to buy from Amazon :)
