26.Iomega 120GB Firewire Desktop Hardrive from: Iomega

Electronics : Iomega 120GB Firewire Desktop Hardrive

This is an excellent product. As fast as an internal drive. Sleek and easy to carry. It gets the job done. When used with a 6 pin connector the unit will draw power from the PC. My only quibble is that the unit comes with a 6 pin firewire cable. Not much use if you intend to use it with a Sony Laptop, whose i-Link requires the four pin connector. Iomega's support desk were pants when I asked where to get a cable. But there are plenty of suppliers out there, as Google attests. You can change the interface to USB 2 if you purchase the optional module, though this is pricey. That said I recommend the unit if you don't fancy building your own.

This is an excellent piece of kit for anyone who is serious about video editing. It allows the playback and editing of your videos without using your camera as a video player, which saves wear-and-tear on the camera, and is more convenient.

The built in screen and speakers are great for previewing your tapes.

I would recommend this unit to anyone, with just one reservation - the price. How Sony can justify such a high price is beyond me. At the end of the day all this unit has to do is play back the tapes - something which a sub-£300 camera does equally well, with the added functionallity of recording too! This really is a piece of kit for serious video editing only. It is very hard to justify it for the average home ... Read More:

Wanting to transfer and edit my old 8mm films I came across the idea of using an analoge capture card to get old films into my PC. For under £100 compared to £650 for a decent DV Camcorder I was a little sceptical. (especialy after reading some of the other reviews) However, I was pleasantly surprised. If your PC has a good amount of memory (512Mb) then the quality as well as the smoothness is very good and most watchable on TV (if a little grainy at times). If I had one complaint it would be the fact that rendering files from AVI to MPEG takes a while however, if you can live with that then you wont be sorry.
