Tried out the recorder and thought it was well worth the money.I was greatly impressed with the 40plus telephoto lens and the image stabiliser both were excellent.But do get a firewire cable to download your video to your hard disk.The fact that Sony didn't include it didn't bother me.I had to pay about £4 for one and it works well.As I am not planning to go for an Oscar anytime soon, I'm happy with it. So my advice? Go on--you know you want to!

Especially good is the lack of any audio hum from the camera - as no moving parts, so the built in microphone is actually quite useful for a change. But the camera is ahead of the PCs and MACs editing abilities in that AVCHD is not yet edited natively. The sequence goes something like this. 1 record an hours footage in high def onto 4GB memory stick. 2 archive the entire memory stick into a folder (still 4GB obviously) 3 on the mac, open final cut express 4 and use the log and transfer screen to select the folder and open it to reveal the video clips. After using my camera for only 5 1/2 hours of recording (in a 16 month period) it is no more. It seems the image stabiliser (if this is the correct term) has decided to pack in. The camera is now useless unless I am prepared to spend a min of £120 to repair. It has not been dropped, damaged or misused in any way, yet recently it began to display an error code on the screen. When checking this fault against my user manual I found it would need to be sent to a sony dealer for diagnosis and repair (what a surprise). When speaking to the after sales people at Sony I was told, in no uncertain terms, to pay up or shut up. Ergo, after spending £50 per each hour of recording I can recommend to all, DO NOT purchase this camera.
