Bought this device just over 6 months ago and it worked brilliantly, data transferred quickily and easily and then one day I booted up my pc and discovered this drive was not showing, went through all the logical procedures, checked the cables were properly connected and checked the fuse... I even tried connecting it to a different computer but still nothing! Fortunately Western Digital accepted that it was still under warranty and have agreed to check it and if necessary replace it, but with a warning that if they do replace it they will not recover any data. They do however recommend a few companies for data recovery and I sent the drive to one of them, they reported that the drive had suffered extreme electrical damage, presumably ... Read More:

I have had this drive for about a week now and it seems to work really well. I paid £60 which seems good value but it's now a bit cheaper. It comes formatted as FAT32 so it's compatible with more systems, but I have reformatted it as EXT3 as I use Ubuntu (Linux) rather than Windows. (I could have used NTFS if I wanted to use it with both operating systems). I like the silicon plastic bits that protect each end of the disk and stop it sliding around on my glass top desk. It powers up and down automatically when I switch my laptop on and off which is handy. I have not tested how it copes with being accidentally switched off or unplugged while in use!

excellent external hard drive , i was going to purchase the 250gb , but i opted for this 500gb just £7.00 price difference between both of them .. i take hundreds , thousands of photos and over time i have lost hundreds / thousands of them . so finally after 4 years i bought a external harddrive , the price of this is just super and the capacity is just big .. this hard drive should hopefully last years .. great piece of kit , if you want to save you computers hard drive from getting clogged up with hundreds of pictures/documents & songs , its so easy to install and so easy to use & very well built and it comes with a super 2 years warranty .. see u ..

Arrived next day but when opened the first thing that fell out was a return slip and receipt from another customer! Needless to say the drive didn't work and is now on it's way back, which is a shame as I really needed it today and will now have to wait for a hopefully better replacment. The 1 Star is for Amazon in this case and not the product, which I'm still going to try. I will review again in a few weeks after I have used the drive. Come on Amazon, I expected better than this and feel let down by your Quality Control procedures.

Bought this to go with my iMac as the internal hard drive was filling up. Sits nicely on the foot which supports the computer. Silent, doesn't get too hot and looks really nice. Was thinking about getting 500GB non-mobile Freecom but really glad I went for the smaller mobile drive as it's much smaller and runs fine without a power supply minimising cables. Adding another higher capacity mobile drive when they come out and sitting it on top would still be smaller than the non-mobile drives. Not had any problems so far, would definitely recommend. Good price on amazon and super saver delivery quicker than expected as always.

This hard drive is brilliant, its small and fits in my pocket. It stores everything I neeed to have on it easily and doesn't need to charge. The only problems I found with this hard drive is that it scratches easily and the software that comes with it isn' worth using.

I looked at a lot of reviews for this (on Amazon and elsewhere) and plumped for this drive because of its excellent connectivity. I'm a Mac user and Apple seem to be moving away from Firewire towards USB so I wanted to ensure the best of both Worlds. My G5 Mac has Firewire 400 and 800 and I wanted to try the Firewire 800 speed. It is very fast. I copied 160GB in around 2 hours. The drive itself is small, neat and very quiet; a few clicks here and there but nothing too noticeable, The lights are a bit distracting if the drive is in use a lot like mine but I put it out of direct view and it is fine. I also own a 320gb toughdrive and a 160gb WD passport USB drive. Both are pretty similar in use, except the toughdrive (with its integral but short USB lead) is slightly fiddly to connect to my laptop. Also, for some reason the blue activity light in the toughdrive lead sometimes goes out and fails to work for days at a time (a friend's toughdrive also has this problem when used with his PC). More seriously, when leaving the drive connected to my laptop for long periods (say 12-24hrs) it gets suprisingly hot (much more so than the passport) which probably does not enhance longevity or reliability. Finally another reviewer mentioned that the toughdrive is FAT formatted, which would restrict max file sizes to 4gb. This drive is simply great! very quick and easy to plug and play, two minutes out of the box and I was backing up files and images. The design is simple but the rubber casing feels good and it won't be showing up any scratches like all the other plastic drives on the market. I can confirm that this drive does live up to being the world's smallest 2.5" hard drive, sits nicely in my shirt pocket. Finally the price - wow ! 25p per GB great value for a great drive

This hard disk drive is not much bigger than a mobile phone - 12.6cm x 7.9cm x 1.5cm - and holds a whopping 250Gb. This makes is the perfect back-up drive that you can take with you. I carry mine in my laptop bag, so that should my laptop hard disk fail I have all my data with me and can still work. Assuming I can borrow a PC or laptop that is. At home it can sit in a drawer and, if you want to pop round a friends house and share some tunes, it will sit in your pocket without causing an embarrassing bulge. I have been using Western Digital for years and have never had any technical problems - I simply upgrade for capacity. The one negative is the bundled sync software. It's a dog and is best avoided.
