I fit this drive in my Topfield 5800 PVR last week as an upgrade to a previous 750GB Samsung SATA drive! The Samsung drive was first class but this one trumps every aspect of my old drive (including capacity and price): It is quieter (almost inaudible), faster to spin up/down, cooler to the touch and of course less power hungry. I use a Sabrent SBT-STDB SATA to IDE Port Mini Converter which has worked successfully in my Toppy with both my Samsung and my new Western Digital drives. If you decide to get this drive for your Toppy make sure you read the relevant sections of the toppy.org.uk for further details on how to upgrade your hard disc drive.

I bough this product a week ago. I am using it on Mac.

Installation was quick and painless as there wasn't any. I simply plugged in the USB and it worked. I re-formatted the drive in Mac OS Extended format and am using it as a back-up drive. Mac Time Machine took maybe an hour to back-up 50GB of data, very impressive speed.

The only downside so far: the drive is a bit noisy. To be clear: this is not the read/write noise, but it simply the noise of either the drive spinning or there may be a fan inside the casing. Either way, I can hear the drive quite clearly when it sits on my desk.

I have had a smaller Freecom drive before that didn't make any noise whatsoever.

Overall rating: 4 out of 5.

Fast, reliable and cheap? Normally you get two out of three but with this drive it's a full score on all three.

One terrabyte for 99 pounds? Seemed too good to be true given other drives for 500mb were around the GBP70 mark.

I've had this for about 2 months now, waiting to see how reliable it was before sharing a review.

It has been superb, no issues at all, and with no drivers needed, it could not be easier to use.

I use it for storage of high def video and backups of my 160GB laptop. A conversion to ntfs from fat took about 5 minutes with no issues at all (needed if you have very large files (eg video).

I haven't been able to verify that I get full 480mbps throughput when writing large ... Read More:

I have just taken my Freecom 320GB XXS out of its packaging and am amazed that so much power can be packed into such a tiny, well-designed unit. It really is an impressive little gadget. Very tactile in its protective sleeve and virtually silent in operation. With Mac OS X there's no set-up to do, you just plug it in, transfer the manuals into your documents folder, delete them from the Freecom (hope that was the right thing to do) and you're ready to go. There's one folder left on it called 'System Volume Information'. I'm not quite sure what that is so have left it on the HD just in case. On the packaging it says this tiny thing can store 215,000 Jpegs -amazing.

Unfortunately this was a very disappointing purchase. On the plus side it is well made, looks good and was a doddle to connect physically, but on the minus side it never actually worked as it should have. The software was difficult to install - I was left wondering if it had just ground to a halt or had completed and not told me. Several attempts at installing the software later and I still had a drive I was unable to use properly. I say properly as I could write data to it, but could not read/access data from it, including user manuals and other preloaded items that I wanted to view. I will admit that I didn't actually speak to Buffalo themselves - they may have had a simple fix to my problem, but I was working on the basis that it should have literally worked ... Read More:

I have owned a toughdrive similar to the above for a year and was very happy with it until I made the mistake of buying a second one. I downloaded all of the data from my laptop while I sent it away to be set up to get a dual boot facility. The new Toughdrive failed within a week of purchase. After lots of discusion the Freecom help desk and lots of tests on other computers they agreed it was the drive itself. I asked if there was anyway to recover the data. The answer was THE ONLY WAY TO RECOVER THE DATA IS TO BREAK OPEN THE UNIT WHICH TOTALLY INVALIDATES THE WARRENTY THEREFORE THE UNIT WILL NOT BE REPLACED. The freecom helpdesk gave me the address of a recommended company who then quoted me 500 GBP fOr the job.

I would highly recommend this disk. I'm using it with a Mac, and it worked straight out of the box (although I chose to reformat it in Mac OS Extended). It is very slim, very solidly build with a completely metal body, and it is almost silent. The buss power is a bonus as well -- really makes this easy to use.

It's difficult to find reliable hard drives, external or otherwise; having lost everything from two failed WD My Book 1 TB drives (despite being mirrored), plus one LAN drive with a WD 1 TB disk, a couple of Lacies and several Maxtor/Seagates (which, frankly, have been the worst of the lot) there were two ways of looking at where to go next. Either avoid WD at all costs or hang on to the premise that lightning cannot continue to strike in the same place . . . my network. So, needing a replacement back-up for my backed-up back-up, I decided to risk WD once more and went for this Elements USB drive. With no time to consider the ramifications of having to format and mess around, this drive went straight onto one of my Macs and is accepting everything quite happily from ... Read More:
