Got this when I ran out of space on my mac. Connected via firewire 800, copying is fast. Best thing about this drive is that it's really quiet (barely audible over my imac) during normal use (like copying a gig or so to it, or watching a stored video). I've heard the fan really go for it a couple of times, but I'd been using it for about 6 hours in a warm room. It was about the volume of a battery-powered radio controlled car (sorry, best description I can think of), but was only for a minute or two and soon quietened back down.

I looked at a lot of reviews for this (on Amazon and elsewhere) and plumped for this drive because of its excellent connectivity. I'm a Mac user and Apple seem to be moving away from Firewire towards USB so I wanted to ensure the best of both Worlds. My G5 Mac has Firewire 400 and 800 and I wanted to try the Firewire 800 speed. It is very fast. I copied 160GB in around 2 hours. The drive itself is small, neat and very quiet; a few clicks here and there but nothing too noticeable, The lights are a bit distracting if the drive is in use a lot like mine but I put it out of direct view and it is fine. The usage guage is useful but the included software on the drive has a drive capacity monitor built in which is more accurate. ... Read More:

In reply to the last reviewer. No hardrive contains the exact GB as advertised because part of the drive is used for the system operations, most people would know this. As far as the actual maxtor 500 gb drive is concerned it easy to use and I have had no trouble with it at all and would recommend it to anyone.

As far as the actual maxtor 500 gb drive is concerned it easy to use and I have had no trouble with it at all and would recommend it to anyone.

I got the My Book to do a back up of my Mac. I plugged it in and it linked up fine and started doing a backup faultlessly. The next evening it was making a little more noise than normal and I realised it was no longer in communication with the Mac. I phoned the Western Digital help desk 3 times. They were helpful but they could have made their instructions a little easier to follow. On the third phone call they did admit there didn't seem to be anything they could do, particularly as the Mac remained out of contact with the My Book. So off the disc went back to Amazons suppliers with everything my Mac contained aboard. The next day I spent several hours changing passwords with all those companies on the web that I visited. Definitely not reliable.
