It's difficult to find reliable hard drives, external or otherwise; having lost everything from two failed WD My Book 1 TB drives (despite being mirrored), plus one LAN drive with a WD 1 TB disk, a couple of Lacies and several Maxtor/Seagates (which, frankly, have been the worst of the lot) there were two ways of looking at where to go next. Either avoid WD at all costs or hang on to the premise that lightning cannot continue to strike in the same place . . . my network. So, needing a replacement back-up for my backed-up back-up, I decided to risk WD once more and went for this Elements USB drive. With no time to consider the ramifications of having to format and mess around, this drive went straight onto one of my Macs and is accepting everything ... Read More:

I've now owned this drive for almost a year - mainly for media storage and to occasionally back up my own documents.

The drive is elegant and sits neatly on the end of a desk, and looks rather sleek. It is quiet at all times, even when being scanned or during transfers. Transfers themselves are quick and reliable. It is also easy to set up - I was up and running with it within minutes.

Just upgraded to this model from a previous Buffalo Drive and couldn't be happier, the transfer rate is quicker than anything else I have used, totally powered by the USB cable so no bulky power supply, shock proof and all for under £100. I especially like the new cable tidy they include as it is such a pain trying to find the cable in a bag to connect the drive when you are on an airplane, with this drive the cable is strung round the drive and never gets lost. Overall i'd rate this as the best value for money and best performing portable drive I have seen.

I have just had the misfortune to purchase a lacie drive.

After going through the very badly documented set-up procedure, I managed to get it working.

The drive was noisy and slow with poor connectivity response times.

The drive then failed, I sent it back to be repaired (took nearly a month) and now it has been returned in working condition minus all of my backups.

Utter garbage, avoid at all costs.

superb silent enclosure.

incidentally, a 32mb cache is no faster than a 16mb cache on a 1tb drive. makes no difference whatsoever.

its just a marketing gimmick to attract people who think more cache is better. It is, but theres a limit, and anything over 16mb on 1tb is completely pointless, you will not see a difference.

I got the My Book to do a back up of my Mac. I plugged it in and it linked up fine and started doing a backup faultlessly. The next evening it was making a little more noise than normal and I realised it was no longer in communication with the Mac.
I phoned the Western Digital help desk 3 times. They were helpful but they could have made their instructions a little easier to follow. On the third phone call they did admit there didn't seem to be anything they could do, particularly as the Mac remained out of contact with the My Book. So off the disc went back to Amazons suppliers with everything my Mac contained aboard. The next day I spent several hours changing passwords with all those companies on the web that I visited. Definitely not reliable.

I bought the Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus from Argos about six weeks ago. It came with a robust British plug, unlike some of the units reviewed earlier. The setting up instructions are rather confusing... the natural inclination is to try using the supplied CD, but that is for recovering your PC when the PC's hard-disc has failed. The actual set-up program is on the Maxtor disc, and is "launch.exe" which would not be obvious to someone not PC literate.
As suggested, I copied all the initial software, (instruction manuals etc), on the Maxtor onto my PC. I later realised that the manuals are repeated in 101 languages, so I later deleted all those except the English ones, so saving a lot of space on my PC hard drive.
The software driving the Maxtor is very easy to ... Read More:

I got my 1tb My Book on Monday, it lasted a whole day and then started smelling of burnt electronics. Contacted Amazon, they were excellent and sent me a replacement Thursday, started it up, backed up some files. Got home backed up some more files from home pc then suddenly it died. It lasted 8 hours.

Thankfully Amazon seem really good about replacing dodgy products but why stock them in the first place.
