Electronics : Iomega eGo Desktop - Hard drive - 1 TB - external - 3.5" - Hi-Speed USB - midnight blue

Buying an external hard drive for your PC is a bit like buying a tripod for your camera - its only purpose is to do the job you need it to do. For that alone this Iomega gets 5 stars, mainly because I can't think of any reason to give it any less!

I bought this firstly to be able to keep all my photographs properly organised in one place rather than on discs, and backing those up is simplicity itself. Once the Iomega is plugged in it is instantly recognised, and picture files and folders can simply be dragged and dropped into it. It really is that simple to set up.

I also have a ridiculously large CD collection - to the point that storage is becoming an issue - and while many of them aren't played that often, its still ... Read More:

I've had this disk for a few months now and it's pretty good at what it does for the price. It's easy to setup (I managed to get it working with my Vista machine and Mac OSX laptop within 10 minutes) and seems reliable. Once I'd transferred my media collection to the disk my iTunes installation on both machines immediately picked up the library and I could then stream the music from the shared drive. I had a few issues trying to stream videos stored on the drive to my Xbox 360 but these appear to be due to the 360 rather than an issue with the drive itself (the main issue being intermittent access to the drive on each boot of the 360). I'd say the main issue with the drive is the poor read and write speed available. Writing data seems to flatten ... Read More:

I have used Seagate drives since the 1990's with SCSI-2 and the Barricuda range has always impressed me with its reliability and pricing. I own an external USB2 Seagate 320 & 2x500MB drives for data storage and use them on Windows XP connected through a 4-port USB2 hub. Never any trouble with them, whisper quiet operation, warm to mildly hot temperatures, quick initialisation @ 5-10 seconds, easy to switch off through plug-play manager & really stylish design. They may cost more than cheaper external drives or plain drives but their many advantages win me over every time :)

Pick any make of hard drive and there will be good and bad reviews, who knows what the ultimate drive is, anyway this is my second Buffalo drive, the first a 500gb I have had about two years, no trouble at all. It looks and feels well built, it is fanless and silent and has never given any trouble at all. This new drive performs in the same faultless manner, I run a mac and partioned and formatted the hard drive in less than a minute. The first drive had an Hitachi drive inside, this one has a Samsung, so there you have it.

I bought this item mainly because of it's E-SATA connection, but when connected via E-SATA it crashed my computer. The seller ended up saying it was due to me having Vista 64-bit, but neither amazon or their own website say that it doesn't work with Vista 64-bit.
Their own website says that this product is compatible with Vista, so how come the ESATA doesn't work with 64-bit Vista. Did they not test it out?
The drive works fine with USB, but I could have easily bought something else if I was just going to use the USB connection. Disappointed.

Unit is very quiet.
It automatically powers on/off when you turn your pc on/off, quite handy.
I'm using the firewire connector and it seems to work fine.

Warning my version came with a 2-pin (US or European) power connector, so I could not plug it into a UK power supply. Which is a bit disreputable of amazon.co.uk when selling it in the UK. Be careful what adapter you use. I used a shaver adapter - the only adapter I had in the house. It worked fine to start with I thought nothing of it. But shaving adapters have only 1 amp fuse, so eventually it fused.

Also be warned, when it did fail there is nothing to show clearly whether the power cord is delivering power or not. An orange light strip across the top and ... Read More:
