This drive is great, silent running and it works fine with my G4 laptop using the firewire connection (Built in firewire cable is genius). There's no need for an external power supply!

I run OSX leopard on my laptop so 500gb is plenty big enough to use Time machine with. Best of all for me is the design it looks really good and the silicon rubber enclosure seems pretty tough, should take care of any knocks and bumps ;o)

Ordered this product well before its release date despite there being other drives out there with the same spec'. I only need it for home use, I don't need resiliency, so this one drive, (no RAID), is fine for my needs.

Install was a pig. Supposedly, you plug it into your router and off you go. Well I did, and the LACIE agent just looped round and round not dicovering the drive. My fixed IP address scheme may have an issue, but whatever, the LACIE agent just could not see the drive. There was no default IP address given, but an obscure facility buried deep in the LACIE agent allowed the shipped IP address to be found and then, voila! Once I had cracked that, fine. Absolutely fine.

Comes with basic backup software ... Read More:

I recently bought one of these for a bargain price (500GB for £160, Staples Store - not on website)..

All was good until I actually tried to use the media sharing.

I have 50GB of music and 5GB of pictures in a dedicated share on the device. Firstly, the Itunes server is broken when using reasonable sized libraries. Itunes picks up the device 100% of the time, but click on it, and it'll disappear with no error. It'll work fine with a few tracks on the NAS, but load up your library, and it will not work at all.

Secondly, the hard disk access with media sharing enabled is VERY noisy. I barely heard a noise from the unit while migrating the 80GB of data to the unit, but turn on media sharing, and it's caning the ... Read More:

I have become a fan of the Western Digital External MyBook drives - i admire their aesthetics as well as their reliability, and so despite the negative reviews on here i figured i'd take the plunge and get the 2Tb World edition model. However, i have had nothing but problems since i bought it and am now sending it back for a refund.
1. After roughly 12 frustrating hours of fiddling with settings, the drive "miraculously" appeared on my network - by this time i was already wary of the device's reliability.
2. The read / write speed is incredibly slow - i have a 100mbps router, but copying files to this drive took longer than it would have to a normal usb2 drive.
3. I left the pc copying files from old drives to this one. During the copy ... Read More:
