The words on the box 'WIN & MAC' are bordering on criminally dishonest. It shows up on the network from time to time, when it feels like it. Can't be formatted as Mac OS Extended and still function as a network back-up. Occasionally refuses to write files if there are too many characters in file name. The PDF 'manual' shows fictitious screen shots. It runs worryingly hot! Their online forum refuses to accept my user name and password and their Tech Support department takes Saturdays off, bless them! Completely unusable in a commercial environment. I'm really looking forward to taking it back to the shop and giving a spotty little herbert a hard time. Shame really... it sounded so great.

I bought one of these recently. I decided to opt for the ReadNAS Duo 500GB model and bought a second 500GB (Hitachi) drive as it only comes with one disk initially. Obviously to have a fully redundant setup you need 2 disks. Its pretty easy to get it going. Mine is plugged into my wireless router so its available on that network. Speed is acceptable over wireless but obviously better over wired networks. But to get the best out of it you do need to tweak it as it doesn't come with optimised settings out of the box. Check out www.readynas.com for lots of useful How-To's and a good user forum. In fact I would say that is an essential site to look at. I should have bought a set of good speakers and an amplifier, and used my IPOD or NW HD to do what I want which is to play classical music. I would have wasted much less time and money. 1) Sound quality - with the speakers provided, this is very poor - very limited high frequency. It is somewhat better when I play it into our 20 year old speakers. 2) Editing information - absolutely appalling. Significantly worse than a mobile phone without predictive text. Four to six key presses to get a capital letter, seven key presses to get a number, fifteen or so key presses to get a zero. 3) Playing modes.
