Having used this device several months so far I find it a good piece of HW.
Does what it is required to do, looks nice. Its power supply is compact, cool and no problems so far (I heard about sparkling and device blowing USB hub products).
The disputable con is that it is too light - of course not if you carry it around.
It is however worth considering to purchase one with more ports as 4 means just 3 extra. There could be fitted a few more in the existing design as the enclosure is relatively large.

I can't understand why people are so negative about this bit of kit.

My personal opinion is this is an excellent bit of kit and although larger than my existing 4 port USB hub, it stacks neatly with my Iomega MiniMax HD so it's not taking up yet another bit of desktop space. I use a MacBook so I don't have any issues with the short cables, but TBH I've got so many spare cables cluttering up my cupboard it's no problem to find a longer cable to plug this in.

Was surprised to see no power adapter in the box and to learn that the unit is obviously powered via Firewire. Fine if you are going to connect up to a machine with Firewire, but with new Macbooks having dropped Firewire 400 this needs to be considered. Despite this ... Read More:

I'm using this to switch between XP and Vista machines.
Unit works fine for keyboard, monitor and audio switching but the mouse suffered from a sticky cursor and phantom right clicks. So I now use two mice.
Switching (double tap scroll lock on the keyboard if you placed the unit somewhere hard to reach) can take an age (well OK 5-10seconds but it feels like a long time when you're waiting).
My final annoyance is that you'll have to be on the right channel during boot or the keyboard and mouse won't register during startup. I get the genius error message 'No keyboard detected. Press F1 to continue.'

I bought a refurbished unit for £40 and a couple of matching WN121T usb adapters for my desktop PCs. I upgraded from a Belkin Pre-N router which was struggling to reach through two floors to my laptop and Squeezebox Duet controller. I found the speed and reliability of the connection much improved even for my laptops and Duet controller using the older 802.11g networking.

One of the PCs with the WN121T usb adapter connected at an indicated 162Mbps even through two floors which was a useful improvement over the 108Mbps of the Belkin router. Also the PC furthest away struggled to get any connection with an 802.11g adapter and now connects reliably around 25-39Mbps.

Purchased a refurbished model for just under £25, everything was set up with ease but had a slight problem upgrading the firmware (And it comes loaded with N American firmware instead of worldwide) Netgear's website had nothing on the V4 router I got so couldn't find any updates for the firmware at all when browsing their website, so I Googled the model number (Along with V4 at the end of the model number, so just check underneath the router to see what version it is) and got a link to software support page for the router on Netgear's site.

Downloaded the worldwide firmware (Won't be able to change the region from American if it's loaded with American firmware) and installed it. My bedroom PC, 360, PS3 and my sisters and dads laptops ... Read More:

Ronseal like does exactly what it says on the tin. Simply plugged all the ethernet cables in and it worked. No stupid software generated wizards or configuration questions. It simply worked. Easiest thing I ever installed bar none.

Performance improvement over 100 mbps is noticeable and very welcome (about x2.5 quicker).

I liked the flexibility of this hub's base stand, which can be moved to enable the hub to stand vertically or horizontally. As with most of the USB hubs on the market, however, it's unlikely to stay in the place you want it if you have eight USB cables connected (seven in, one out) as the weight of these tends to unbalance the unit. Sticking a couple of bits of Blu Tack underneath might help prevent that, but it would be nice if someone made a USB hub that kept its balance.
