151.Linksys WGKPC354G Wireless-G Network Kit 54MBPS Wireless Gateway & PC Card from: Linksys
January 31, 2006
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Electronics : Linksys WGKPC354G Wireless-G Network Kit 54MBPS Wireless Gateway & PC Card

The kit comprises a Linksys WAG354G wireless-g ADSL modem router and a Linksys WPC54G wi-fi laptop card. The kit was £80 in PC World (early October 2006) but £49.99 in Staples. I bought it in Staples.

Instructions for setting up the router are confusing. There are two ways of doing it: using the Wizard or via the Linksys website, but the instructions don't make that clear. Setup took 2 hours, should have taken 20 minutes. The Linksys website is excellent if you want to change router settings such as the SSID (SSID is your wireless network's name that comes up when you search for wireless networks - you may have seen names such as BTVoyager123. The default SSID is "Linksys" but change it for security reasons.)

I have to say that claims people have made about plug and play routers and the 'magic' cd-rom which you insert to make everything go, are greatly exaggeragted. Firstly, let me say that the world of wireless networking for both the home and for office, is a sham of codes and mysterious protocols and numbers. In 2007, you would have thought that it would truly be a matter of just connecting plugs, but this has not been my experience.
About the only saving grace of this modem is the fact that it eventually worked through the blessing of Belkins telephone support staff. I did not find the instructions nor the magic cd-rom very clear at all. I would imagine that a certain amount of luck plays its part here. Let me assure you that I was a cobol ... Read More:

153.Devolo DLAN Audio Extender Starter Kit from: Devolo

Electronics : Devolo DLAN Audio Extender Starter Kit
I bought the Devolo homeplug system after quite a bit of research. I decided to use a homeplug system when I discovered quite how easy it was to see many of my neighbour's confidential documents through their wireless connection.

I bought the Devolo system with high hopes. I was looking forward to being able to plug and go....

Several weeks, and approx £150 computer support time later I was finally able to access the internet from anywhere in my house. It seems that my broadband modem had been unable to deal with more than homeplug, and only connected the main computer in the house - which was where it always had been and didn't need the homeplug to access the internet. I tried ringing Devolo support, but was told that as ... Read More:

This is a brilliant piece of kit. Having used Netgear kit for a number of years, and working with networks as part of my job, this was really easy to set up. All Netgear equipement ( that I have used ) come with a very nice standard interface .

You will need to configure the dns server addresses, and perhaps the local subnet ranges ( although the default will be ok by default ) .

You will need to know your NAT ( can disable this ) , DNS servers, Encapsulation ( usually pppoA) , internet account login details, Multiplexing Method ( VPI=0 , VCI=38 works for most pppoA ) . You get lots of security settings and DMZ server access if required.

I also disabled the wireless access , as I do not use this.

160.3Com OfficeConnect ADSL Wireless 11G (54Mbps) Firewall Router Modem with 4 port switch from: GM 3COM

Electronics : 3Com OfficeConnect ADSL Wireless 11G (54Mbps) Firewall Router Modem with 4 port switch
I purchased this product on Nov, 2005, along with a 3Com wireless card . The router works with my hardwired equipment right out of the box. It also works with a Win2000 old laptop (with the 3Com wifi card). However, it intermittently disconnects when used with any other wifi laptop.
I tried to upgrade the firmware from 3com support website but failed with the
"File verification failed" message. I should have listened to other customers complains and buy a proper product. What a piece of junk!
I would not recommend this product to anyone.
