This can be a helpful book for foreigners living in the UK who struggle with simple things like getting served in pubs because the etiquette here is often subtly different. Kate Fox does a good job at explaining the how and why of all that. In places Watching the English is brilliantly insightful, but most of the points are laboured. I feel the book ought to have been about 1/3 as long. It is very funny in places, but by far the funniest is that the author was 'Margaret Mead'-ed by the goths she spoke to. They cleverly told her hilarious rubbish ("You have to grow your hair long when you're a goth - people know you haven't been a goth very long if you have short hair"!), she believed it was an accurate portrayal of the ... Let's start off with Mr Leach is not a man to mess with he looks the part and that's just on the cover of the book. You would certainly want him on your side if you where in a spot of bother and not knocking on your front door looking for you. In all this was a very good account of the underworld which you can believe or not it's up to you. I enjoyed this book and it will certainly be staying in my book collection.

Most of you, if you're cookbook collectors, know by now that you rarely get a straight-through cookbook. Rather, it's usually a melange of "where this recipe came from" coupled with some history and/or the author's comments. Such, even more so, is the case with EATING FOR ENGLAND. This is really not so much a cookbook as a reminiscence and "thoughts" about cooking and England. I was immediately reminded of the novel "Barring Some Unforeseen Accident" in that the author incorporates an actual cookbook within the novel (not anything you're going to want to make, by the way). The way that author pokes fun at cookbooks and their "makers" is very funny, and if you've read enough of these, you'll see what I mean. My only real complaint ... Read More:

This is history at its best - it's readable, compelling and thoroughly enjoyable. Tinniswood's book achieves many goals in one - a fascinating social history, meticulous biography, powerful family saga, and not least it is a really good and engaging read. The tale begins with Sir Francis Verney who ran away from his teenage wife in 1608, sold off much of the Verney property, converted to Islam and became one of the most feared pirates on the Barbary Coast. Carry on to read about Bess, who ran off with a clergyman; Cary, a heavy gambler, and Henry who was obsessed with horse racing; not to mention those involved in the English Civil War; Mall, who became pregnant out of marriage, or one of the later relatives who was hanged at Tyburn. NOT ALTOGETHER UNLIKE MARTINA COLE WHEN SHE WAS GOOD BUT LESS BAD LANGUAGE!!!! WELL WRITTEN AND IF I HAD THE TIME WOULD HAVE READ IT IN ONE SITTING.. HOOKED FROM THE 1ST PAGE TO THE LAST.. THE END WAS UNPREDICTABLE AND I AM NOW READING THE SEQUIL TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS TO DAISY NEXT. EXCELLENT BOOK.
