I feel compelled to write a short note to counter some of the enthusiasm of this book's (and the restaurant's) devotees. I have not eaten at the restaurant in Italy, so I can't vouch for its delights, but I ordered this book with some anticipation, and was very disappointed. While it appears that many like the design/photography of this volume, I found it really dated. The colour is over-saturated, the food styling uber-seventies, the format over-large and ostentatious, the paper glossy and off-putting to handle... This, quite apart from the recipes which are over-complicated and old-fashioned looking. They remind me of some 'gourmet' vegetarian food I had in Rome once, which was enough to put me off veggie food for life. So stylised - and not ... Read More:

I have a few of these little goodfood books and they have been brilliant. After deciding to cut right back on the amount of meat we eat in our house i opted for this book but was a little surprised. Many of the recepies contain quite a lot of cheese (which my husband and son will not eat)meaning that it probably wont be thumbed through like the rest of my books. The dairy free chapter and the casseroles chapter did have some really good ideas but i have been a little put off with the calories and cheese content in the other chapters.

My Mother in Law gave me this book for christmas as I was interested in the slimming world diet. What a fantastic book, just as it says 30 minute meals that are easy to to cook and taste delicious. As yet nothing has failed us, infact we have even tried recipes that we would not normally try. I have shown this to a few friends and thay love it and have also ordered it.

I bought this book knowing virtually nothing about bees (they exist, they live in hives and they make honey was about the sum total of my knowledge).
I have been considering keeping bees for a while and thought that a little reading would help guide me to a decision.

From memory, the book covers: types of bees (not just honey bees), types of hives, the gear required by the beekeeper, where bee hives can be situated, how bees can be purchased, the maintenance of the colony & hive, pests and how to mitigate their impact, the social structure of the bee colony, the way honey is produced by the bees, the 'swarming' of bees, how to harvest honey from the hive and how to store the harvested honey. There's definitely more - my memory ... Read More:

This is not the first raw food recipe book I've bought, but it is the first that's helpful enough to actually get me started. Last weekend I entertained friends for dinner twice, both times using recipes from this book. The chocolate mousse alone is worth the cover price!
European readers may wish to know that American weights & measures are used, but I haven't found this to be a problem.
I found the introduction and glossary very helpful as I'm just getting started with raw food, but I imagine this will be great for novices and old hands alike.

I love this little book and its small enough to carry around (why do cookbooks have to be so big). An ideal book for a vegan beginner or those of love western style comfort foods (which I do!).
"In the Kitch" shows that you can have your vegan cake and eat it with recipes such as Cheezy Cream of Broccoli Soup, Potato and Pumpkin Curry, Stuffed Shells with Red or White Sauce, Dream Bars, Fresh Fruit Crumble, and Hot Fudge Brownie Sundaes
There are more international recipes too such as Pad Thai and Japanese Soba Noodles with Steamed Vegetables and Tofu. No pictures but some funny ass girl talk between sections which I loved.

Although it is not necessarily a *bad* book, I don't believe it is cheap, or simple. Suggested simple meals are "jacket potatoes" and "poaches eggs", and suddenly the jump is made to the likes of "leeks baked with blue cheese" and "pumpkin goulash", which make up the bulk of the book. There are no real intermediate meals. Neither are the meals cheap

The lack of in-between cooking would be fine if something more exotic was what you wanted, but it's not appropriate in a student cook book. The same applies for the likes of the cocktail and juices section. It also does not help that there is no pictures within the book, which would be handy to know what the meal your cooking should look like.

What stops me giving this a lower rating is that ... Read More:

A great and refreshingly different vegetarian cookery book. Beautifully presented with fantastic, easy to follow recipes for authentic, substantial and very tasty food which is out of the usual veggie cookbook norm. A great one for a dinner party menu with a difference. I would definately recommend this as a great pressie to buy for someone, vegetarian or not!

Beware. Not everyone on a low carb diet will find these recipes particularly low carb. There are many that include onions and flour (both have a very high GI). But in it's favour there are no Americanisms in sight, and at least the dishes taste wonderful!
