The deisngs in this book are wondeful. There is deinfately something to suit all tastes. The designs are easy to follow and would suit cake decorators of all abilities. There are two designs I love, other people have picked out other deisgns they love - a great book if you make christmas cakes for other people.

Debbie Browns books are quite inspirational (I own quite a few!) She is very good at sculptural effects. Many of her actual cakes are quite complicated affairs. Very beautiful, but often more detailed than necessary for most celebratory functions,except those very, very, special ones. I tend to take an idea from one of her many wonderful creations and make a cake topper or smaller side decorations. To spend so much time recreating her masterpieces as she has intended only to have them consumed in an hour or two I would find difficult to take. For me Debbie Brown inspires me to adopt, adapt and create, but her cakes are literally too good to eat.

I bought this book not realising that the recipes use american measuring in them. However, a search on the internet meant that conversion to weights was pretty simple. Quick tip though - find a website that shows the weight of different ingredients. A cup of flour does not weigh the same as a cup of sugar! However, once you are over this hurdle, you won't have a problem making delicious cookies. I've not found a decent british recipe for cookies since I started baking. Say what you like about Americans, but they definitely know how to make a decent cookie.

If you're a professional, a student or an experienced amateur then this will be your bible. Everything is covered here and is presented superbly. You get the recipe, the yield and a nice little picture showing what its supposed to look like. What more could you want? Another great addition is the run down of all your raw materials and the pros and cons of each (which earns you many brownie points as a student). There is also a lot of stuff about various tools of the trade but as most of us know, you buy said gizmo, use it once and then it finds its niche on a shelf somewhere. Having read several books about the art of building wood fired ovens, I bought this one having read several reviews that gave it a real positive view. However, I was quickly disappointed by a book that is full of history and detail about ovens used in large houses of bygone ages and the detail behind the history through the ages. There is very little real detail that anyone looking to build an oven could really utilise. It makes for interesting background reading but the detail for building is extracted from the view of how some of the old commercial/large houses built their ovens and hence is of limited scope. This is a very good book for beginners and also has some very useful tips for more advanced cake decorators. The best part of this book is the very detailed and step-by-step way in which flower-making in sugarcraft is explained with photos for every stage for flowers - for example, a rose is explained in 6 stages. However there are only very few flowers - the best ones are the rose, sweet pea and poppy. Also there is an overview of all the techniques you will ever need in decorating a cake - piping, lace making, smocking, figure-modelling, runouts,etc. The only section I found a bit disappointing was the children's cakes section, which I felt did not have any new or interesting ideas. But, overall - an excellent buy.

I bought this book so I could bake for my 5 year old daughter who is allergic to eggs, nuts, strawberries to name a few! Thank you so much Rosemarie for taking the time to write this book - the look of joy on her face that she can eat a cake for a change (even if she doesn't like the taste of it) is priceless. One comment I would like to make is that there are a few "americanisms" I don't understand. Luckily I have an American friend who can translate ingredients such as Club Soda which is Sparkling Water and not White lemonade as I was about to add in the recipe. A few other recipes suggest adding instant chocolate pudding mix or similar things which we don't have this side of the pond and we don't know what they are so we can't substitute them. It ... This is not one of the popular books that always shows up in the top sellers of the baking section (like Mary Berry or Nigella Lawson for example) and I just recently discovered it wanting to extend my baking book collection a bit ... and what a wonderful choice it was! I am SO pleased I bought it - even though it is far shorter than most of the "baking bibles" out there it is such a gem to have in your kitchen simply because everything works. Sue Lawrence's book contains sweet and savoury recipes (about 30% are savoury ones), with precise and clear instructions making sure that they work for you. I already owned Peggy Porschen's previous book "Pretty Party Cakes", so just knew this one would be equally good. The book has been invaluable as I have made several celebration cakes, and find that her designs are so pretty and she explains each stage with care so it is easy to understand. I always use the different flavourings she describes for the cake mixture, buttercream and soaking syrups, which make such a difference to the taste of the cake. I also found the tables at the end of the book very useful for working out the quantities of cake mixture, sugar paste and marzipan required for cakes / boards etc., especially for my first wedding cake which turned out wonderfully.
