I thought this book contained some nice and well illustrated recipes, even if some were so basic and well known that the average cook would already have them in several standard cookbooks. A couple of her famous 'novelty' cake recipes, perhaps suited to childrens birthdays, would have been welcome. The book gave the impression there were loads of additional recipes Jane would have liked to include but couldn't - why not!?
Her enthusiasm is encouraging, but unless you are already a Jane Asher fan, you may find her writing style and little anecdotes a bit twee and irratating and her overuse of parentheses (brackets) is truly infuriating!!

Nigellas book for me are like having a big sister in the kitchen with you talking you through something in a friendly, none threatening way.

I must say when I read a few reviews that gave one star I began to wonder if I was reading my book right. But I figured that Nigellas way of cooking, presenting her food and the recipes themselves are never going to be everyones cup of tea. I find Nigellas recipes quite retro with the right about of modern added to them to balance them.

If you have yet to purchase this book I can recommend all the recipes but give a particular thumbs up to:

The Kerela style omelette with green chutney. I have no ties to Kerela but can safely say omelettes are made the same way across ... Read More:

Once you get used to the different measurements and have all of your supplies, this book is perfect. That is the only thing I would suggest in this book and others from this author, a conversion chart. The one I used was easily found online through google however. Her artistry captured Wallace & Gromit perfectly and the instructions (for this beginner) were ABSOLUTELY PERFECT!! I have found nothing even close to this in the states, of course the US market doesn't "get" Wallace & Gromit so it isn't a surprise that their how-to books would not be as interesting or creative with characters from here. PLEASE CONTINUE WITH THESE BOOKS!!

Food and Drink : Chocolate: Best Kept Secrets of the Women's Institute
The previous reviewer seems to have misunderstood this book. It is a book by the renowned Women's Institute, with recipes written by women who have long cooked these recipes, most of which would have been passed down to them from their mothers and mother's mothers. Other recipes have more of a contemporary flavour and prove that the WI is not stuck in the past, but grounded in tradition and willing to blend what they see as the best of the new with the best of the old.

It is not the most exciting book out there, but it was not meant to be. It's a solid book of tried and trustworthy (and some prize winning) recipes.

If you use these recipes they work and you will be applauded for your efforts. It is not a coffee table book or ... Read More:

I was given this book as a gift and I really like it. There are a nice range of recipes included, many different types of muffins, scones and breads; and the recipes have step by step, easy to understand instructions that I have found very useful as a newbie to bread-making. I'd recommend the book to newbies as well as more experienced bakers as the variety of recipes included should appeal to many tastes.
