Food and Drink : Homemade Cakes: Tasty Old Fashioned Recipes
This is an ok little recipe book but fairly basic. However, it is very American and it is not full of "old fashioned" cakes. I don't think that cappucino truffle cake could be called old fashioned. I was hoping for tea breads and madeira cakes and such. Also the book is American with no UK conversion - recipes call for Graham Crackers, sweet butter, cake flour, heavy whipping cream etc with no help for finding alternatives here. You could probably guess what the equivalents may be but the only way to find out will be to experiment (or research it). Overall not impressive, there are much better cake books in my collection.

I have baked the oatcakes, scone pizza and the ingenious Victoria Sponge - (brilliant recipe - easiest ever - start by warming the eggs in their shells and no tedious creaming together of fat and sugar - just whisk together the flour and sugar - perfect cake at end of all this!). My daughter age 9 won second prize at the local show with the Rock bun recipe - She is convinced she could have had first had I taken the buns out of the oven sooner!!!! My mother however has had the best results of all of us at the show, competing as part of the WRI and achieving a near perfect mark for the Strawberry Tarts! What more can I say!

I was given this book as a present and though I certainly wouldn't have chosen it for myself, it does cover an incredible range of ideas and occassions for cupcake lovers. I was always taught to keep food decoration within the realm of the natural so the blue and red fourth of july cupcakes were a bit tough for me to stomach, though they tasted fabulous. A foodie with greedy housemates, I did enjoy the idea of bitesize deserts using cupcake moulds that I would not have considered before, including summer pudding, tiramisu and alcoholic jelly - perfect for upmarket individual desserts.
The range is staggering and more than you could ever hope to work your way through - hannukah cupcakes, anyone? However, a good selection of recipes, scaled ... Read More:
