There are some great cakes and ideas in this book. I make cakes for a living and feel this book is more aimed at begginers than experienced sugarcrafters (unlike Debbie Brown's books that I feel are more for experienced decorators and beginners can find daunting). If you want to make cakes for your kids birthdays then I would recommend this to have in your collection.

I thought this book contained some nice and well illustrated recipes, even if some were so basic and well known that the average cook would already have them in several standard cookbooks. A couple of her famous 'novelty' cake recipes, perhaps suited to childrens birthdays, would have been welcome. The book gave the impression there were loads of additional recipes Jane would have liked to include but couldn't - why not!? Her enthusiasm is encouraging, but unless you are already a Jane Asher fan, you may find her writing style and little anecdotes a bit twee and irratating and her overuse of parentheses (brackets) is truly infuriating!!

If you're a professional, a student or an experienced amateur then this will be your bible. Everything is covered here and is presented superbly. You get the recipe, the yield and a nice little picture showing what its supposed to look like. What more could you want? Another great addition is the run down of all your raw materials and the pros and cons of each (which earns you many brownie points as a student). There is also a lot of stuff about various tools of the trade but as most of us know, you buy said gizmo, use it once and then it finds its niche on a shelf somewhere. While I have to accept that the recipes are good and work, I do not accept that you can reduce hundreds of different breads into a few 'type' recipes. One of the joys of baking at home, once you get past the basic level, is surely that a little bit of this, and a small amount of that, can make a huge (positive) difference to a bread. For those looking to really get a feel of dough and the nuances of it I recommend Joe Ortiz, for the experienced, or Linda Collister for the the not so confident. Both offer a wealth of bread recipes that while superficially similar show what a wonder bread really is. If you want to reduce your bread baking to getting a few done well then this is the right book for you, but if you are an experimenter, ... Read More:

I bought this book not realising that the recipes use american measuring in them. However, a search on the internet meant that conversion to weights was pretty simple. Quick tip though - find a website that shows the weight of different ingredients. A cup of flour does not weigh the same as a cup of sugar! However, once you are over this hurdle, you won't have a problem making delicious cookies. I've not found a decent british recipe for cookies since I started baking. Say what you like about Americans, but they definitely know how to make a decent cookie.

I thought this was a new book, but its not. It is just a combined book of Naughty Cakes and Xtra Naughty Cakes. If you dont have these two then this is a great book with lots of ideas, and would get 5 stars! However, if you do have them, then there is nothing new in this book, and I wish I hadnt wasted my money. It should be clear, and I wish Debbie Brown, or her publishers, wouldnt keep rereleaseing the same stuff but in new covers or with a different title.

What a lovely little book, the perfect accompaniment to a nice cup of tea! Find out what your work cup says about you; whether Wagon Wheels are smaller than they used to be; why fig rolls have a 'sense of mystery' and why shortbread is a biscuit with delusions of grandeur! I particularly enjoyed Nicey's thought about the pink wafer and fully concur that it is the biscuit equivalent of 'The Singing Detective'. The only glaring omission, for me, was the toasted teacake. A great 'gift book' that you can dip in and out of. Funny and engaging.

Debbie Browns books are quite inspirational (I own quite a few!) She is very good at sculptural effects. Many of her actual cakes are quite complicated affairs. Very beautiful, but often more detailed than necessary for most celebratory functions,except those very, very, special ones. I tend to take an idea from one of her many wonderful creations and make a cake topper or smaller side decorations. To spend so much time recreating her masterpieces as she has intended only to have them consumed in an hour or two I would find difficult to take. For me Debbie Brown inspires me to adopt, adapt and create, but her cakes are literally too good to eat.
