When I borrowed this book from the library, I was convinced that I wouldn't have time to prepare my own baby food, but the book looked interesting so I thought I'd have a look. Well, the introduction alone made me a make-my-own baby food convert. The amount of nutrients lost in the commercial cooking process is often upwards of 60%! I have a six-month old and cooking time is at a premium in my house, but the authors contention that you can make two-weeks worth of baby food in a couple of hours is true. Most recipes can be completed in three simple steps, and more elaborate toddler and adult versions are also given for each fruit and vegetable. At first I thought this book was brilliant but actually it's got incorrect information in it which could be a danger to your child and I couldn't trust it!! In the 4-7 month category it has recipes for oats and meat. If you're weaning your child before 6 months you should know that you cannot give meat to them and only gluten free oats, which it doesn't mention. I wouldn't trust this book and will not be using it. Unfortunately I didn't get to look at it until it was too late to return.

I think this was key to the success of this cookbook; you could use what you could find and not have to scour the earth for the right ingredients. I was looking at the copyright on the book. My mother gave me hers about two decades ago; but the original date on her edition was October 16, 1961 (amazing) and this book is every bit as useful for me today as it was for my mother. My copy of this book is very well thumbed. Cas Clarke takes the practical attitude of providing good food that doesn't take ages to make. Parents can enjoy the recipes without feeling that they're eating kiddies food - she also has some recipes introducing more exotic tastes. I found the menu sections very good (it tells you what her children were eating and at what age - I bought this book after having my first child and found this sort of information very reassuring). Also, her section on childrens' parties are very useful - down to what to serve, theme parties and how the most uncreative person can become a whizz at making birthday cakes. This book is great! I would not have gotten through weaning my daughter if it had not been for the imaginative and fun recipes in this book. Not only are they healthy and easy to cook, but also tasty delicious and have become firm family favourites. I would recommend this book to any parent, or anyone in need of a decent cookbook actually!
