Hard to imagine, but this book about the current state of the world of wine blends the thrill of an expose with the wisdom imparted by a primer, while written with the verve of Tom Wolfe. I learned more about the good stuff, about wine snobbery and - most important of all - about how to enjoy wine 'without the tears' than I ever expected. Not bad for something that costs less than a decent bottle of Cannonau.

A real antidote to the too-slick Nigella/Gordon coffee table food-porn sort of book, which I imagine people buy to look at but rarely actually cook from. This is inspired by the power food has to bring people together, especially people from diverse cultures and the book captures this beautifully, with photos that feel real and capture the imperfections of real cooking.

It has a homely quality to it and incorporates nice stories by those who've contributed recipes. It's clearly intended as a book meant to end up with food stains and finger marks on the pages. Lovely

167.The Coffee-House: A Cultural History by: Markman Ellis

Food and Drink : The Coffee-House: A Cultural History
This is a remarkable and persuasive account of the rise of a specific form of public sociality in 17th-century England: the coffee house, a seemingly unlikely blend of middle eastern and Protestant values, thrown into fruitful alliance by the presence of a stimulating beverage - 'the wine of Islam', as Markman Ellis characterises it - a drink that served to introduce the discipline of sober public discourse into a hitherto booze-sodden British life.

Coffee, the world's second-most traded commodity (after oil), provided the catalyst for a novel kind of mercantile wide-awake club which led, eventually, to marine insurance (through Lloyd's Coffee House) as well as to Starbucks and Coffee Rebublic, complete with their array of newspapers ... A superbly well written book which covers a wide subject area concisely. This book manages to be interesting and informative, and certainly has benefits to give those who follow its wise words.
As the son of a person who is suffering final stage bowel cancer i believe that i am in a good position to judge the truth of the content of Juicing Therapy. Just three weeks ago, my mother was lacklustre and without energy, after reading and 'digesting' the information in Dr Jensens book (and obviously using it), there is a considerable improvement. Nothing else we've tried has worked!
This book has information that should be of interest to all those who need or like to look after their health - and in my experience it is solid information.

The guide is very much standard in terms of layout - begins with notes about the tasting and rating processes, gives an overview of Spanish wines, and then delves into the various regions giving an overview of each, together with listings of most estates and their wines. The book ends with a nice list of top wines, and an index that seems to work well.

However, on page 9, the author states that with each rating he also gives the price range of the wine, as well as a rating of the value for money (1 to 5 stars). Umm, nice... but where is this information? It seems to me that the publishers of this English-language edition simply removed this information for what can only be commercial reasons and protection of import monopolies in your ... Read More:
