An amazing work which should be praised to the heavens by those advanced winetasters who want to better understand what it is they're seeing, smelling, tasting and feeling. And why. Not a book for beginners, this is a carefully structured work of high calibre, right up there with the other landmark winetasting works by Amerine, Baldy, Broadbent, Lehrer, Noble, Peynaud and Vine. Every serious wine library should have a copy.

Food and Drink : The Classic 1000 Cocktails (Classic 1000)
Following the buzz around the release of the Sex In The City film, I bought a couple of copies of this book as birthday presents for girlfriends, to accompany designer cocktail glasses.
It's a thorough and informative compendium and you certainly wouldn't need to own another cocktail book if you had this one on your book shelves, but I - personally - like more photos (so I know what end look I'm aiming for!).
However, I AM looking forward to sampling many of the 1000 suggested concoctions around at my chums houses over the years to come... cheers!! hic!!!

Like many I had a bad experience on Tequila as a young man. What I have learned is the stuff I was drinking then isn't comparable to the 100% Agave Tequila readily available today.

The recipes in Margarita Rocks really show off how versatile Tequila is and despite my past have given me a new enjoyment of this most noble spirit.

Amazing book, amazing drinks and beautifully produced. I've also been told the authors have opened their own Tequila bar in London called Green & Red. If the drinks are as good as they are in the book I think I may have found a second home.

This is perhaps not quite the definitive book the subject of absinthe but almost certainally the most accessable, enjoyable and visual. The images throughout are ecceptional in the diversity ranging from glorified, idiealistic portraits by Van Gogh, to anti-Absinthe propaganda courtesy of the Fench Goverment. This book is throughly researched and provides an insighful backdrop the the romantised world of 'absinthe-culture'. Not only is the research extensive and the images captivating, there are also mini-biographies and absinthe-celebrating poems the fasciniating and often tragic charactors of Verlaine, Rimbaud, Wilde and Baudelaire. Overall the book is a pleasure, easy to absorb and easy to find oneself captured in.

If you are expecting an autobiography of Hugh Johnson, you'll be disappointed - this is his jottings/ramblings on wine and anything biographical is almost coincidental. It is not his life story. It is, of course, beautifully written and from this aspect streets ahead of his competitors. This is not a book full of gobs of blockbuster fruit flavours, but of understated, evocative prose. But at times it does teeter on the brink of becoming pompous - all those black tie dinners with the wine aristocracy drinking impossibly ancient bottles, and endless comments on the very old bottles he has in his almost medieval cellar at his mansionly home. On the subject of Robert Parker he is also pretty outspoken, and perhaps needlessly so, and it begins to smack ... Read More:

This classic by French oenologist Peynaud is dense and intellectual, chock full of charts and detailed descriptions of the chemical reactions that go into the making and aging of wine. Intended primarily for the serious, advanced wine fancier (or wine maker), it's rightly regarded as a classic.
