I picked this up thinking it would do as a stocking filler for anyone keen on Morrissey or Men Behaving Badly. However, having had a good look through I'd say that this book has enough bar jokes and anecdotes to satisfy the men behaving fans but also has a number of really good brewing recipes and beer tips to genuinely interest amateur beer brewers and enthusiasts. Overall, a very good read.

Having spent 50 years at the sharp end of the Wine Trade I found it fascinating to read about the ephereal aspect which one only encountered through reputation and the more elite journals of the business. Apart from being saddened by the discrediting of one much loved personality in the trade I enjoyed the discomfort of the exposure of a well known charletan and the unveiling of the enormous vanity of his hugely wealthy clients whose judgement deserted them when social acceptance was the carrot. I have both this and the 3rd edition, and I would strongly recommend you to have a recent copy in your collection, but not to rush out and buy the new edition every time it appears. The 3rd edition had >1,000 pages and this one >1,600 pages, I suppose the next edition will have >2,000 pages - which ever way you look at it, it's fantastic value for money in terms of /kg. I know that much is said for and against Parker, but the point-rating system and the well-written text makes it an interesting and useful book. I have read some reviews that praise Parker for opening up new wine producing areas, new markets, and new tasting options. Ive been a personal trainer for a while now and ive always questioned our so called correct nutrition, when i read this it made more sense then any textbook ive read and so now ive incorporated it into my diet, im not fully raw yet but i plan to be by end of year. great read and insightful. give this a read and it might just open your eyes or at least start the process.

The 7. edition of Parkers Wine buyer's guide has lost all of it's meaning. The wines are only rated by points, and there are no tasting notes, no "hedonistic Parker writing" to each wine, which is essential when choosing wines for buying and ageing. You can't see the costs of the wines either, only the pricerange of the winery, which of course doesn't say anything regarding the specific wine. The wine guide, which used to be a detailed positive list of wines to buy, is now a general description of the wineareas with an ultra short presentation of the winery. Wine enthusiasts should still buy Robert Parkers Wine Advocate, where the tasting notes are available, but if you already subscribe to Wine Advocate this Wine Guide is money in the drain. ... If you have enjoyed the delights of CJJ Berry's 'First Steps in Winemaking', then this is an ideal companion and the logical next step. Although one or two of the recipes have been repeated from the first book, this contains over 130 mouth-watering recipes for home-made 'country' wines. Even at today's prices, they can work out as little as 20p per 75 cl bottle!! Unlike the first book, the wines are listed in alphabetical order rather than seasonally which makes them easier to locate. The only problem I found was deciding which to make first and having to limit production to the space available in the house. This is the best. The book is divided into handy sections i.e. How To, Juices, Smoothies, Reference. The star rating for the Juices & Smoothies is really useful i.e. Energy, Detox, Immunity, Digenstion and Skin. The reference section lists ailments and recommended juices/smoothies that may help. Just love this book, will be buying some for friends for Xmas.

I bought this for my Irish father who now lives in England. He visits Ireland regularly and knows some of the pubs in this book. Would make a great present for anyone with Irish roots or also if you're planning on going on holiday there it would be a handy guide of places to stop off at for a pint! A lovely freeze frame of Irish pubs.

After attending one of Simons wine tastings at the 'Taste of London' tour in 2007 i purchased his book to learn more about his particular style of wine tasting. Simon pretty much teaches us how to enjoy wine, for our enjoyments sake, NOT as some poncy lifestyle choice. I've spent a few years investigating the smells and tastes of wine but i've never read a book that cut it all down to the basics, so much so that my own boyfriend started to take an interest in wine. Its not dusty, arrogant or prejudiced. It is pure advice. And good advice at that.
