The high quality patisseries of Paris are an extraordinary visual treat and their patisserie would be a deadly addiction were it not so rich (and expensive). Unless you employ help in the kitchen, this book should be viewed as a tour of the top Paris cake shops rather than a recipe book . In trying to recreate the gateaux in this book you might lose the will to live. Home bakery is for me half the fun of creation and half the fun seeing it disappear but this book is about art.
I've also long held the suspicion that some of the awe inspiring creations are given stability and attenuation of taste by the inclusion of tallow, just as they use lard in their best croissants I think certain all butter patisserie could collapse under its own weight ... Read More:

Oz Clarke tells it like it is & thankfully seems to respect his reader regardless of whether they know their Pouilly Fume from Pouilly Fuisse.

If you're planning to stock up & take a foray into the wonderful world of (decent) wine, this is as good a starting point as any. However, if you're looking to do some research for wine exams or use as a reference book, then there are other, more weighty tomes out there which do a more exact job.

But, back to the book in hand. This books has interesting Food/Wine notes & also a decent synopsis of the various countries of origin. The A-Z of wines, grapes etc is pretty good & although there are perhaps a few missing (if you're feeling particularly pernickety)isn't that ... Read More:

"Man Walks into a Pub" is a well researched piece of work from a guy who spent a fair number of years in the booze trade. I bought this book after it was featured in a copy of the Writers' Forum and the author seemed to be a genuine down-to-earth fellow; the kind of regular who you'd be likely to meet in a local bar.

It's packed full of anecdotes - for example, the average pint back in 1914 was 8% in strength (compared to 4-5% today).

This is the kind of book that your father would enjoy on his birthday, at Christmas or on Father's Day. It's a read for the man who probably has just about everything and you can't think of what to get him. It covers economic, social and business aspects of alcohol. Even politics is discussed - ... Great wine guide. It's very similar to Hugh Johnson's pocket guide but with much greater detail.

Talking of Hugh Johnson, this guide suffers from the demon proof-reader too - perhaps they've all been sampling too much vino! Unless you've got a fantastic memory, Hugh Johnson's guide is probably more useful as it can easily be carried around on wine buying trips, Wine Behind TL is really too bulky for that.

Wouldn't be without it though. It's encyclopedic knowledge will help you track down the wines that you want.

Contrary to what the two other reviewers of this book have stated,to me one of the strengths of the book is the tasting notes.
The majority of wine enthusiasts are going to seek out older wines to drink as they appreciate that most good burgundy needs plenty of bottle age before it is at its best.
The book is very well written and represents good value at the price.----------lets face it, you would struggle to buy a half decent bottle of burgundy for the price of this book!!!

Thanks Pete, now I don't have to spend a fortune travelling round the world finding out about beer cos you've done that hard work for me.
But hang on there just one minute, you haven't been ALL round the world at all (not that you claim to have), so can we hope for a follow up? More countries? More characters in more bars? How about trying to find the most miserable landlord/lady or bar staff in the UK? Lots of candidates in my experience. Ask them to top your pint up (to the pint you asked for and will pay quite a high price for) and watch how they react.
And PAGE 358, Status Quo ARE good, so I've deducted a point cos you said they weren't. Other than that, pure genius,. Fancy a pint?

I found the style of this book very good, you can dip in and out to the chapters that are relevant to you, and it's full of useful tips particularly when it comes to avoiding potential pitfalls. It appeals newcomers to the industry, or prehaps someone currently working in a bar, and wants to take it to the next level but does not have a business background.
My only criticism of this book and many others in this category is that it is a written from a US perspective, so the sections on finance, licensing and legal side are not that useful.

Great fun, informative and inspiring, I haven't finished it yet and I can't wait to get brewing! Leon sounds like the kinda guy you just want to be mates with, love the pore-boy stuff, great way of hashing together the basic stuff for brewing and bottling, of course none of us would dare to hazard the making of a still!! Overall a great read laced with good humour

Harry Craddock has often been refered to as the only drink purist, and was probably the world first mixologist. He is certainly well above his contemporary -sorry Mr. Dick Bradsell! As essential as this book may be to any pofesional bartender, it is not on the shopping list of "Ibiza"-styled barmen. Indeed, is has a refreshing lack of disco-drink, and focuses only on true classics -sometimes with a Craddock's twist!. However, before being enlightnened by his masterful exelency, one will have to get their heads around the measurments used in the recipes... -What on earth is a "Pony" or a "split"? But, this is a small price to pay for some of the finest drinks ever created. Last but not least, the packaging is superb!

Hard to imagine, but this book about the current state of the world of wine blends the thrill of an expose with the wisdom imparted by a primer, while written with the verve of Tom Wolfe. I learned more about the good stuff, about wine snobbery and - most important of all - about how to enjoy wine 'without the tears' than I ever expected. Not bad for something that costs less than a decent bottle of Cannonau.
