This is an excellent book with much useful content and advice. However, it is let down in my opinion by the significant use of statistics from the American Homebrewers Association competitions. I am sure that AHA members brew some fantastic beers but are the ingredients they use in brews aimed at winning competitions really a reliable indication of what defines any given beer style? For example, in the discussion of ingredients used in English Pale Ales Table 16.10 shows that commercial brewers almost always use English hops with Goldings, Fuggles and Challenger dominating as might be expected. However, the statistics shown in Table 16.11 show that AHA members tended to use Goldings, Cascade or Fuggles in that order. The distinctive American ... Read More:

I bought this book on the back of so many good reviews but it was unable to help me in solving my long-term issues with food.
The book contains really good information and is a worthwhile read but I don't think it's the solution for everyone.
It didn't get to the root of my psychological issues and didn't help me out of my poor thought patterns.
Try it, it may work for you, then again it may not.

I agree with most of the above comments on this book. It certainly opened my eyes to the exhaustive process of wine making and French Beaurocracy! I certainly shall not quibble about the price of a good wine again!!!

Patricia is a complete inspiration and a very good writer.

I am so pleased to see (from her website) that she appears to be going from strength to strength.

She describes the people in this book so well that when there is a death, you feel it, and the news that one in particular died made me cry.

I shall certainly be buying her next book.

I bought this book for my husband who has been brewing in our kitchen for 30 years.

There is a lot of useful information in this book and it is great for bedtime reading because you can pick it up and browse through a few pages.

I marked it down by a star because some of the ingredients are either impossible or difficult to get hold of here in the UK.

A lovely book covering a specialised area in good detail and at a bargain price. It shares the style and feel of the better travel guides, and gives enough detail for the reader to feel confident in finding most of the places described. It covers a good price range of food and wine. Go quickly, for like all such books, the passing of time will reduce the accuracy.

In April of 2007, I spent a fortnight in the UK, including a week in Scotland. The best part of the vacation was three days spent on Islay, which is a gorgeous island with great whisky and a rich history. I've never been a big fan of travel books, but luckily stumbled on Jefford's study of Islay and read it cover to cover. Jefford is a terrific writer and researcher, weaving the geology, history and culture of the island in the warp of beautifully-sourced studies of each of the island's distilleries. It's simply a terrific book that anyone traveling to Islay (or wishing to) should read before their trip. Oh, and Islay is a fantastic place to visit.
