I'm a Chef, and have borrowed copies of Escoffier's Le Guide Culinaire from friends whenever I need it. On a lark, I ran a search on Escoffier here at Amazon.com. I was stunned to find this book for the low cost of $12 or so, knowing that every other copy I had seen cost $60 or $70. So I ordered it and paged through it. Well, it only prints 2300 or so of over 5000 recipes in Escoffier's treatise. Admittedly, probably more than the home cook actually needs, but nowhere does the book say that it has been abridged. But, like many Amazon.com customers, I found myself in the position of thinking "but it'll cost me half the price of the book to send it back." I recomend this book to anyone who wants to make their own bithday cakes. The designs are many including storybook favourites, number cakes, sport and animal themes and many more. The cakes turn out just like the pictures, are easy to make and cost a good deal less than commercially bought cakes. No disappointments here, unlike other books I have used. No special tins are required, most designs are based on a round or oblong basic sponge cake cut to size using clear colour photographs to guide you throughout. i like martha stewart, subscribe to her magazine and bought last year's christmas book, but this one is missing something. to me, lots of the ideas i've seen before either in her magazine or on her tv show. some of the ideas were great as usually, but they're not worth the price of the book.
