This is a great book but if you, like me, cannot use alcohol even in cooking (Yes, I KNOW the alcohol burns off, some of us shouldn't even taste it!) then the majority of the hot recipes you simply cannot make. Delia does state that, for the cakes, orange juice can be used instead of liquour. But, otherwise, almost all the other dishes involving meat (aside from the traditional turkey, of course) are soaked in the stuff! For that reason I recommend Nigella Lawson's 'Nigella Christmas' a little more. Nigella always tries to provide an alternative to the alcohol, something Delia doesn't do outside of the baking section. (But then we know Delia likes a drink!) Was really surprised that one reviewer was disappointed with the Cashew Nut Roast in this collection of recipes.I have written out this recipe for countless friends and everyone loved it including non-vegetarians.I cook this roast frequently and always keep a supply in the freezer.

I first bought this book as a Penguin edition in 1965, and this was a reprint, the Penguin book being first published in 1963. I have used it ever since, the family favourites are Beef Ragout and Beef Goulash. My copy is falling to bits, taped up and pages disintigrating and dotted with bits of sauce! I wish they would bring it out again, but in the meantime I will get a used copy from Amazon (and hope it's in a better condition than mine).

I love the way his recipes are simple yet soooo tasty. I especially like the way he standardises the quantities in a recipe, for example a standard pack of meat, one onion and a can of tomatoes makes a delicious Bolognese. Who wants to faff around with a pack and a half, one and and two quarters or a can and a bit!!! Good buy, go for it!

I am familiar with the Gooseberry Patch, and have a couple of their cookbooks already, so was expecting a plastic comb binding, matt paper and black and white drawings. This is a spectacular knock your socks off kind of book, which covers pretty much everything you need to know about Christmas in America, but with shiny, shiny paper, colour photographs, a lie flat spiral binding and hundreds of pages. This book is, as I understand it, a compliation of their 10 years' worth of annual Christmas books. Gooseberry Patch is all about their three ladies - the 'Country Friends' who adorn the books, country style, and the failsafe recipes, mostly provided by readers. Few quality books are available for hospitality & catering courses. This is the best one i have bought, full of really useful information. It has increased my knowledge of the subject a great deal. I hope it helps you as much as me!

As the other reviewers have stated, this really should be out on the coffee table as it's just lovely to look through - I have honestly never seen such a superb looking cook book! However, I'm afraid I actually use mine for (horrors!!) cooking, and it is just as good to use as look at. The chocolate blackout cake alone is worth the money... I've lost count of the amount of times I've made it now, and it is by far the most requested one I have. The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is due to the slightly patronising tone the book is written in with regards to the decoration of cakes. Basically, throughout the book you are told (and obviously these are my words not hers) 'I do it this way, but I'll dumb it down for you ... Read More:
