If you could only have one book in the kitchen, this should be it. It de-mystifies the 'Art' of cookery in a way that is both clear and consise, whilst at the same time making it possible for the reader to think creatively themselves. I have tried several books for cake decorating and Carol Deacon's are the best I have found. Easy to follow and detailed instructions ensure anyone can get a great result. The kids love the cakes!

I cannot praise this lovely book too highly. It has all the David magic - exquisite prose, trenchant opinions and luscious recipes: some are of academic interest but nonetheless fascinating; most are dishes of simplicity but also subtlety and finesse. The closing essay 'Para Navidad' is perhaps one of the most perfect writings about food I have ever read. Congratulations too, to the book designer and the photographer. The beautiful cover is a true indicator of the delights within and Elizabeth David, who had a keen visual sense, would have loved the photographs which are not so much of cooked dishes but of simple, pure, beautiful ingredients that make you want to dash off to the kitchen and set to. Quick clear up. This set comprises of both standard individual books, The French Laundry and Bouchon with a nice printed hardboard sleeve (pictured). The addition of the hardboard sleeve to slot both books in along with the price is the only difference in buying both books separately. Onto the review. I knew I wanted The French Laundry to challenge myself and take my cooking to another level, but wasn't really drawn to Bouchon particularly (I have a lot of "normal" cookbooks). However when I purchased this from Amazon it was an extra £8 on top of The French Laundry to get Bouchon thrown in (Bouchon RRP £40), so I thought why not and ended up surprised how much I like the Bouchon book. Another brilliant cake book from Debbie Brown. The designs in this book can be approached by a first time cake maker or a professional. I make cakes for a living and own all of Debbie Brown's books, I think she has the best style of all the current novelty cake authors at the moment. The instructions are easy to follow and all the designs are very appealing. I would only put her 50 Easy Party Cakes book ahead of this one for kids cakes.

I bought this book as my son's 7th birthday is fast approaching and I realised that I could only remember a few party games that I did as a child. This book has proved to be a real life-saver - it is set out in groups of different ages which is great as my 4 year old daughter is having some friends at the party too. Each double spread page is set out with the typical age group, the optional ages (good when there are mixed ages at the party!), how many players are needed, and what the object of the game is. It then describes in detail what is needed, as well as optional changes you could make and trouble-shooting tips.
