I first came across rose Elliott's Bean Book when I was at University and I literally taught myself to cook from it and survived on a very slender budget by cooking all her wonderful, cheap and tasty bean recipes.

My original copy was falling to pieces so I've just bought this new edition -- and i still love it! The warmth and friendliness of the book are very encouraging and the recipes are lovely.

There is only one point where I've got to criticize Hugh FW - his recipe for goose. Believe me, you don't wont it half raw but really well done. If you never tried it like that, you don't know what you missed. I'm german and goose has always been the traditional christmas roast in Germany, so I really know what I'm talking about. A good goose of about 5 kg needs about 5 hours at 175 °C, 200 °C for the last 90 minutes to crisp up. Taking into account that you've got to check and baste the bird regularly and be a bit flexible with cooking time, that should give you a really tender and moist bird. Having said that, the rest of the book is really great. I tried a lot of the recipes which all turned out fine. The "Broccoli with Anchovy and caper mayonnaise" ... Read More:

What a delight to find this book. All of the other reviewers are spot on with their championing of this treasure-trove of gorgeous recipes. As with her other books, Roden gives amusing and interesting anecdotes while relating the recipes and you can imagine the communities and individuals whence the recipes derive.

It is a must for any kitchen, with informal and easy to follow recipes making effortlessly delicious meals and treats.

Highly recommended!

I bought this book having tasted chocolate brownies baked by a friend. I am sure she is an excellent cook, however I am not. I can cook many things but for some reason cakes fail me...until now! Very simple recipies with basic ingredients, fantastic results. I can now bake cakes!

A true Master Chef - I own practically all Gary Rhodes cookery books and use them quite regularly. As with all his books, the recipes are accurate, and, as far as I am concerned, all translate from book to plate perfectly. Here is a true and committed cook, unafraid to pass on not only his wonderful recipes but many techniques that the reader is lucky enough to learn without putting in the years that this Michelin star hero has invested. The book makes wonderful food reading if the purchase is for that reason only.
