This is a user friendly version of the best everyday recipes from the earlier 'Complete Cookbook' (which I also have).I consider this compact format to be a justifiable and useful reprint of recipes from the very comprehensive larger book. Both the visual and written content is clearly set out and easy to follow; perfect for both the experienced but busy family cook or the novice. Mary Berry may not be a trendy celebrity chef but she knows her onions! Her recipes are always a hit with family and friends and have in fact inspired a few of the more domestically challenged to have a go themselves! I'm buying another copy as a present for my brother who is a late newcomer to the pleasures of cooking, previously having survived on dining out and ... Read More:

Food and Drink : Real Fast Food: 350 Recipes Ready-to-Eat in 30 Minutes
For the past few years I've found myself cooking the same sorts of dishes, spending a couple of hours in the kitchen, making something that would last a few nights. But they weren't particularly exciting; not the 10th time around, at least. The odd take-away or pre-packed meal got me through the end of the week when I was too tired to cook.

A friend bought me Real Fast Food a month ago. What can I say? This is transforming my cooking. Truly inspirational. Without a doubt the best and most practical cook book I own. I can't recommend it enough.

The book has a great "store cupboard list" of ingredients that will help ensure you are always able to make something that hits the spot - tasty, varied and and quick dishes ... Read More:

This is just as great as all the other books - easy, delicious recipes that actually work in normal life. You'll find some really new, inspiring recipes for pasta and risotto ... One of my favourites is the "salmon fillet wrapped in prosciutto with herby lentils, spinach and yoghurt" (tasty and moist). The book is also great, if you're planning to make your own pasta but don't know exactly how: Jamie explains this in detail. I would recommend this book to everyone!

What I found most interesting about this book was not so much the recipes, but more what it revealed about the conditions and attitudes to food of the post-war years, when this was first published. So much has changed, partly thanks to Elizabeth David herself - thank God we no longer have to use Primula as a substitute for mascarpone, as she grudgingly suggests! And I cannot imagine a time when pasta was a speciality to be tracked down in a couple of London shops.

If you're used to the more verbose, food-porn style of Nigella and Jamie Oliver, the recipes here may seem a bit spare - an ounce of this, two ounces of that, and fry. However, this format means that she can pack a lot into this little book. I don't think I've ever attempted ... Read More:

In this book, you'll find a wide variety of recipes ranging from british over north african and asian to the italian ones that are Jamie's trademark. There is something for every occasion in it, up to making your own bread. A book not only for fans but for everyone who's looking for easy manageable recipes that can still impress. Try the baked butternut squash served warm with a salad - you're sure to get applause. A book that should be missing on no shelf.

I was just browsing in my local bookshop under the "Cooking-category". I came across Elizabeth DAVID's 'IS THERE A NUTMEG IN THE HOUSE" by accident. I bought the book straight away, and I can't put down the book.

I had tried Pastenak (pasnips) and cress cream soup. Spicy lentils soup is just delicious! And, the spiced prunes!!! hmmm.....

One of new year's resolution is to eat healthily, more vegetables and fruits!! I know I can do it this time. :) Whats so AWESOME is the introduction of new ways of cooking veg (eg parsnips - which I normally roasted them) and simple and clear instructions.

Funny and witty delivery! Thoroughly enjoyed the book.

I have also bought "French Provincial Book", and ... Read More:

Don't believe the one star reviews - I've had this book for years now, I'm coming back to it again and again and I'm definitely not a beginner or a bad cook, even if I say so myself. The recipes I made all turned out well (apart from one time which was my own fault, I boiled the onions for stuffing too long, to find the exact point is a bit tricky) and they're definitely not all simple beginners' stuff. Try the pork fillet in Parma ham with the rhubarb, it's a great dish for entertaining. Of course, the book contains easy recipes (and those that look impressive are often easy enough to accomplish, if you follow the recipe) but perhaps that's just the good thing about it: beginners won't be frightened away. This is actually the book that got my brother in law cooking ... Read More:

My copy of this little book is now almost illegible in places due to heavy use in the kitchen. Over time I have tried most of the dishes, and I keep returning to our many favourites. I have several Indian friends who tell me that the recipes are very authentic versions of their family home-cooked meals. Try these recipes and you'll never want to cook with pre-made sauces, or eat takeaway curries ever again. An absolute masterpiece which I'll probably have to buy another copy of to replace my be-smeared one.
