Having visited India about 30 times in the last decade, I am prompted to revisit Keith Floyd after having seen several of the new (2007) series of "Rhodes Around India" on UK TV Food. Gary is all so serious, like a fish out of water, and always trying to second guess the Indian chefs who are there to teach him how to cook authentic Indian grub. Keith bubbles over with enthusiasm and wit: he clearly loves the country, and this is reflected in this book. Not only are Keith's television programmes on India so much more entertaining and informative than the Rhodes series, but the book really does translate the on-screen cooking into easy-to-follow and helpful recipes, of great variety. I bought this book on eBay and found myself in proud possession of a hardcover `second edition' reprint from 1965. (I have no idea if the current version is updated or even converted to metric, sorry). Elizabeth is a darling ! and definitely the first English Domestic Goddess, long before Nigella et al came onto the scene. Her delivery of these many, many regional recipes is neither as school madam-ish as early Delia, nor as infuriatingly chummy as Jamie-the-mockeny-Oliver. She engages us in such a way as to make one really believe that nobody cooks like the French, but at the same time that anyone can recreate this culinary wonderland here in grey old England. Easy to follow recipes, some sumptuous dishes, what more could you want ? The recipes are indeed very quick & are easy to follow but for me the most impressive aspect of this cookbook, is the range of recipes, there's a very good cross section of food & you really don't feel as if the book has been either "padded out" or "stripped down", it's absolutley spot on. One of those books that makes you thinks "ooh, I never thought of doing that" & because it is so well done, "doing that" doesn't seem to be a challenge. A really useful & enjoyable book with some really delicious reipes.

Although this really is a very nice cook book from the always reliable Ainsley, it is in fact a stripped down version of the 2006 "The Feel Good Cook Book" with only 80 recipes instead of the original 150! This wasn't made clear in the description of the book when we bought it so we feel we've been misled.

I often cater for people with certain dietary needs. One of them is vegetarian, on a low-carb diet and has a wheat allergy. The veggie bit I'm used to, but the other stuff is tricky until you get this book. It may not say it on the cover, but this is just as useful for somebody on a wheat-free diet (though not necessarily a gluten-free one) as somebody on a low-carb diet. Since recipes containing wheat are nearly always high carb, they're not in here. It seems like a bit of a niche product, this recipe book, but the food you make from it is just great food, like anything you'd expect from an experienced food writer like Rose Elliot.
