This book is perhaps (I do not agree) beautiful, but it's place is not on a coffee table. It is NOT an art book. I do love to read food literature in the kitchen or in bed, this one will not work there. I am disappointed at the format, huge, oversized and...pompous, so are the photos, most of them totally uninteresting. It should be more down to earth if it is meant for reading. Resize if considering reprint?

Ths book is fantastic, I could not have got through my teens without it.. The things Delia can do with a Cucumber and a flacid piece of meat are tremdous and a must see.. The pictures and diagrams are particularly helpful and arousing

This, like many of Marguerite Patten's other 'Basics' other books, is simply invaluable. Particularly key, now many of us are growing our own & therefore understand the seasonal 'glut' dilemma - there are, I promise you, only so many cucumbers you can eat in a week ........

I have made several of the recipes in this book and all have been delicious, i particularly like the section on Traybakes, which as a mum is perfect for school teas and birthdays, i have had lots of compliments from the results of this book and am always recommending it to others.

As many others have mentioned this is a truly outstanding book. Aside from the chapters on the ethics of meat, which many others have covered, this really is an encyclopedia of meat. The various chapters explain all the different cuts of meat, what good cuts look and feel like and the appropriate way of cooking. It does have many recipes but its much more than that it gives a great overall idea of all the different cooking processes. These sections are particularly useful and give great background info on each method the likes of which i have found in no other cookbook. I have recently been diagnosed with insulin resistance, and told I needed to follow a low GI diet. A recipe book created by a chef who was also diagnosed as insulin resistant seemed like an obvious choice, but I was very disappointed for several reasons. First, most of the recipes do not seem practical for everyday living. Many of them have long cooking times and need perishable or unusual ingredients, and therefore need forward planning. Second, I feel there is not enough information to enable the reader to make their own low GI recipes. There is GI table in the front, but over-simplified (for my tastes) into low, medium or high GI and not containing that many foods. I had looked forward to this for some time. I have been a fan on NS on TV since he first appeared. I like his style, his taste and his appreach to food. So why oh why or WHY did NS have to ruin it all for me with a single thoughtless - and eeming uncharacteristic - comment. He makes the point that continental stews are flavoursome and interesting while ours '...smell of old people.' As newly retired. I found it belittling, insulting and it stopped me reading the book in my tracks.

I am an inexperienced cook and a mum of a three-year old. This book provides hundreds of healthy and tasty recipes. Very helpful index in each section with pictures and approximate cooking/preparation time. Very well organized, very good range of recipes, everything easy to find, lots of useful tips and beautiful illustrations. My only complaint (as with lots of other cookbooks I have) is lists of ingredients saying "175 g of carrot" rather than "one/two small carrots", but it seems to be a trend...

I have found this to be an extremely useful cook book and believe it delivers everything it states in the title - an excellent offering of Sunday lunch menus. The summary of timings is extremely useful for planning what can be made ahead and I have lost count of the number of times I have made the beef casserole and mustard mash - excellent for a cold winters day. The range of recipes is varied and I have used some dishes such as beef wellington for dinner parties, which has added another dimension. The recipes are both easy to follow and make which means it can be used by all wannabe cooks, irrespective of ability. Overall, highly recommended.

I recived this book as a present and have enjoyed using this for quick and easy fish dishes. Also, unlike Real Fast Food there are good chicken dishes here particularyl of the curry and Moroccan variety.
