Having bought Aga Easy (Lucy's second book) I was compelled to buy "...Country Kitchen", her first book. And sure enough I'm not disappointed. But there wasn't really any doubt was there?

The recipes are varied, easily followed and written in a way that you feel Lucy has told you personally what to do.

Cookery books is such a competitive market that it's difficult to know what to buy. Take my advice and get this. Personally, I'm going to wait for her next publication and buy that too!

Jane Grigson was one of the leading cookery writers of her generation with some similarity to the writing talents of the great Elizabeth David, in that her books combine superb writing with impeccable research.
In fact in this book she acknowledges Elizabeth David (ED), 'whose taste in the matter of fruit is unequalled' and other cute references such as in the article about 'pickled cherries', followed by a recipe for 'Cherry Brandy', `ED's Black Fruit Fool' - `a recipe for devotees of prunes and dried fruit and `ED`s Sweet Flan Pastry` - `easy to remember and efficient in practice'.

`It is from a love of fruit that Jane wrote her book, the much awaited companion volume to the enormously popular and successful `Jane Grigson ... Read More:

I have recently decided to start cooking fish, and knowing nothing about fish (where to get it, what to get, how to cook it) I decided to buy this book.

It is brilliant, the information on fish is extensive and informative showing extensive research and knowledge. The recipies are also great.

"Elizabeth David discovered her taste for good food and wine when she lived with a French family while studying history and literature at the Sorbonne.
A few years after her return to England she made up her mind to learn to cook so that she could reproduce for herself and for her friends some of the food that she had come to appreciate in France.
Subsequently Mrs David lived and kept house in France, Italy, Greece, Egypt and India, as well as in England.
She found not only the practical side but also the literature of cookery to be of absorbing interest and studied it throughout her life."

This, her first book, appeared in 1950:-

'With this selection of Mediterranean dishes, I hope to give some idea of the lovely cookery ... Read More:

Great and easy to follow.

I would say that this book is aimed at people who are at about my level.
i.e. Know your way around the kitchen but don't often have time to prepare fancy food and tend to leave it for special occasions. You can cook a few things but are just looking for some new ideas.

If you are an experienced cook and have several cook books and are at a stage where you can put things together yourself, you're happy swapping ingredients, you don't need to follow things step by step - and you have cooked a lot of chicken dishes already, then you might find that this book doesn't offer too much new inspiration for you. After all, take one chicken dish, swap two ingredients and you have a different chicken dish.

This book is so easy to read, everything is explained right down to the finest detail. Instead of persuding the reader to go out and buy all the latest gadgets there is a comprehensive list of utensils which will be used regularly and not lay in the back to a kitchen cupboard gathering dust.
Ainsley's enthusiasm is there on every page and carries you along so that you attack each recipe with confidence. He suggests that you add your own touches and change things to suit your taste, something I have not read in a cook book before. Old favourites are there with a modern twist along with new and adventurous dishes and every recipe shows the fat, carbohydrate and calorie content, a must in these health conscious days. There would be only one thing better than this book in the ... Read More:

Food and Drink : Mary Berry's Ultimate Cake Book: Over 200 Classic Recipes
This is an excellent book and one of the best about baking. I've made lots of the recipes and they've all turned out well. The photos of the finished items look inviting and inspiring. I think that the various writers of recipe have areas of cooking that they particularly enjoy and the books on that topic are their best and I feel that Mary Berry likes baking.
