Nigellas book for me are like having a big sister in the kitchen with you talking you through something in a friendly, none threatening way.

I must say when I read a few reviews that gave one star I began to wonder if I was reading my book right. But I figured that Nigellas way of cooking, presenting her food and the recipes themselves are never going to be everyones cup of tea. I find Nigellas recipes quite retro with the right about of modern added to them to balance them.

If you have yet to purchase this book I can recommend all the recipes but give a particular thumbs up to:

The Kerela style omelette with green chutney. I have no ties to Kerela but can safely say omelettes are made the same way across ... Read More:

This is a really good cookbook for those with dietary issues. I avoid gluten and dairy, and although this book was just gluten free, it is easy to substitute soy milk or other non-dairy ingredients for the recipes in the book.

I made the Christmas cake last Christmas, and will be baking it again for this Christmas. It had a lovely baked almond 'crust' and was really moist inside. I've made quite a few of their recipes and they've all turned out really well - banana bread, yorkshire puds and the like.

The recipes are really easy to follow and well laid out. Most of the ingredients are easy to get hold of too - which is always a bonus!

"Eating For England" is re-heated "Toast". Disappointingly, Slater has produced a clunker here, and where Toast worked because he linked food memories to his own childhood, this latest volume lacks any structure on which to hang various short observations and sketches about food. What's more, it's quite repetitive in places, and simpy doesn't work in others.

Slater at his best pinpoints a long forgotten food memory that several of us of a certain age will have had. There are a few gems like that here (the whole chocolate Club biscuit experience for example) - but these are too few and far between for my liking.

Nigel Slater writes best about himself and his relationship with food. When he tries something different - observational ... Read More:

I have recently been diagnosed with insulin resistance, and told I needed to follow a low GI diet. A recipe book created by a chef who was also diagnosed as insulin resistant seemed like an obvious choice, but I was very disappointed for several reasons.

First, most of the recipes do not seem practical for everyday living. Many of them have long cooking times and need perishable or unusual ingredients, and therefore need forward planning.

Second, I feel there is not enough information to enable the reader to make their own low GI recipes. There is GI table in the front, but over-simplified (for my tastes) into low, medium or high GI and not containing that many foods. Also, bread in particular may be low, medium or high GI depending ... Read More:

Some superb recipes. I love the apricot & all bran cake, very popular with my friends, but I added ginger after the first try. The nice thing is that this is an English cookery book, so we can easily get the ingredients. Thanks Antony.

I fail to see the connection between this book and Sunday Lunch as an institution, and I never noticed Gordon campaigning for its 'revival' on any other platform than in this book (unlike Jamie Oliver, who gets a bee in his bonnet about e.g. school dinners but does follow it through).
The idea of creating 3 course menus and setting out a schedule of what to prepare when are very helpful, but leafing through it I didn't find that many recipes that the average family would happily select to cook and eat for Sunday lunch - pan seared foie gras? curried monkfish? clams with aioli? Bet the kids would love that! They look and sound lovely, and as a confident cook I'd have no qualms about attempting most of them, but as the basis of a 'campaign' for encouraging more families ... I've just cooked another dinner from this book and yet again it was scrumptious as well as healthy. I'd recommend this book to anyone, not just those with diabetes. Yummy!

I like the way Nigella writes- it's as if you're having a conversation with her. The introduction to each recipe is always good, a bit of historical information or personal anecdote that makes wonderful reading.

I've made a few dishes from "How to Eat" and I think her stews do work as well as making the best roast chicken, beef & gravy!

I would recommend the following:
Basic Roast Chicken- pp. 8-9
Chicken & Chick pea Tagine- pp. 111-2
Beef Stew w/ anchovies & thyme- pp. 112-3
Braised Pheasant w/ mushrooms & bacon- pp. 114-5 (I used chicken for this)
Chicken Stew w/ couscous- pp. 228-229
Roast beef & gravy- pp. 278-80

I love this book - everything I have made from it has come out as it should have! The ingredients aren't too exotic, and there's a good variety of recipes. There is a good mixture of simple and fancy things to make.
The only difficulty I had was that quite a few of the recipes contained nuts (I live with someone with an allergy) but in a lot of cases the nuts weren't a crucial part of the recipe anyway.
I love this series of books, and this is my favourite so far!
