A small little nicely decorated notepad with those forgotten recipes that your nan used to make, nice for those that get homesick from time to time and cannot for the life of you remember the ingredients let alone the recipe.

Nice introduction with simple rules for always making an excellent paella (I actually broke most of them until reading this book)

I also liked the fact that all the ingredients in the recipes were easy to find.

I will start by saying I have only given this book 4 stars due to the fact that I have given its bigger brother, The French Laundry cookbook, 5 stars. In my opinion TFL is a better cookbook for those, like me, who like intricate dishes. Having said that, Bouchon can be just as intricate with some dishes, and the result just as pleasing.

Thomas Keller's style comes through in this cookbook, much like TFL, and I agree with the previous reviewer that you will probably come back to this cook book more often than TFL. The book is well laid out, has fantastic photographs for nearly all the dishes on offer, and offers some invaluable tips on how to get the best from certain dishes or certain techniques.

My recommendation ... Read More:

Really liked this book - bought one for myself (have lived in Japan) and one for a UK niece who likes sushi and now wants to prepare them herself. Great how-to photos, excellent basic introduction. I already have several sushi books but had to get this one once I'd stumbled across it in my local library.

What I found most interesting about this book was not so much the recipes, but more what it revealed about the conditions and attitudes to food of the post-war years, when this was first published. So much has changed, partly thanks to Elizabeth David herself - thank God we no longer have to use Primula as a substitute for mascarpone, as she grudgingly suggests! And I cannot imagine a time when pasta was a speciality to be tracked down in a couple of London shops.

If you're used to the more verbose, food-porn style of Nigella and Jamie Oliver, the recipes here may seem a bit spare - an ounce of this, two ounces of that, and fry. However, this format means that she can pack a lot into this little book. I don't think I've ever attempted ... Read More:

I liked Kylie's previous books but the recipes in this one don't cut it. A lot of the base ingredients (ginger, garlic, sugar, soy, oyster sauce, chinese rice wine, vinegar, peanut oil) seem to be repeated over and over again and whilst I know that Chinese cooking does rely on these, I also know there is more variety to be had.

A lot of the dishes are likely to end up tasting the same, I think. They lack subtlety and fragrance.

Sorry Kylie - I think you can do better.
