This is more than a collection of recipes. Although there seem to be relatively few recipes and simple preparation, every dish I have cooked has been subtle, delicious and fragrant. This book is all about home cooking with lovely explanations of where and when you might eat the dishes. Interspersed with the recipes are pages on Persian ettiquette and history and rich images of Iranian life; a street vendor at night with stacks of primary coloured tins covered with arabic script, Isfahan bridges in golden evening light, bold mosaic tiles, a peridot green lake below snow capped mountains and a bride dancing in candy pink tulle.

The images accompanying the recipes are no less luscious; piles of dried limes, and barberries, bright yellow ... Read More:

I have many relatives in Poland and I visit there on a regular basis, therefore I wanted to reproduce the cuisine at home. This book is very usefull in that it contains lists of menus (so you know which foods are supposed to go together) and a huge variety of polish recipies. Polish cooking is usually very basic and this book is a prime example of this with very simple instructions. Another hit with my family was the section on Polish drinks, containing recipies for delicious flavoured vodkas. I was very pleased with this book indeed.

This book is rubbish if you want to learn anything other than Greek history of food and culture. It offers no pictures of the recipes, nor of presentation - instead showing pictures of old men smoking and the Virgin Mary. It appears to be designed for a Greek person who already has a great knowledge of Greek cooking. I see no point in the book recommending not to use British alternatives, without then explaining how to make the Greek version. I want my Money Back and will be asking. Otherwise, if you want a dust collector, I highly recommend.

I bought this on recommendation and am delighted with it. The 'homestyle' dishes may not reflect current trends in Japan, but these are dishes I've been served by my grandmother-in-law and in Japanese Inns. The book is certainly full of the 'homestyle' dishes I wanted to replicate.
Everything is clear, the step by step instructions are accompanied by photos, the layout is unfussy and easy to follow yet somehow seems stuffed with useful additional tips and advice. All the tools and utensils you would find in a traditional Japanese kitchen are shown and explained so that you can make an informed decision about suitable substitutes.
As long as you have access to Asian markets (I live in London so can get most of the ingredients) this is highly recommended ... Read More:

A few years after her return to England she made up her mind to learn to cook so that she could reproduce for herself and for her friends some of the food that she had come to appreciate in France.
Subsequently Mrs David lived and kept house in France, Italy, Greece, Egypt and India, as well as in England.
She found not only the practical side but also the literature of cookery to be of absorbing interest and studied it throughout her life."
