This was a huge deception (in contrast to my previous cooky DVD purchase, the outstanding "Decoding Ferran Adria" Decoding Ferran Adria DVD: Hosted by Anthony Bourdain, which I unreservedly recommend). Wakada's book is very good, but this DVD fails to add to it in any way. The sound is very poor, making the commentary hard to follow behind the "lift music" soundtrack, and there are very few scenes of interest in the kitchen or concerning his recipes or approaches. Keep your money and spend it on Decoding Adria!

I've been a fan of Jamie ever since I caught one episode of Oliver's Twists on the Food Network here in the US. His recipes are simple, but full of flavor. He has a great sense of humour, and is quite enjoyable to watch. As a warning though - this is actually a two-disc set, not the single disc stated above. enjoy!

This is more about the wine trade, and trends (as in the mid-90's) than about how wine is made, or why wines from a particular region or grape variety taste as they do. Thus in the episode on Cabernet, we learn a fair bit about the changing structure of wine marketing in Bordeaux, and we see a nouveau-riche chateau owner's big party being rained out, but we learn nothing about what goes on in the vineyard and winery. To my mind, this is a skewed emphasis, and not particularly interesting. I'd rather know what makes these wines so special.
