I have been using this cook book in conjuction wih Rose Elliot's Bean Book for at least 20 years now.I have not yet found a recipe which doesn't please. It is easy for the beginner and still satisfying after 2 decades. This should be in every vegetarian's cookery library. The carrot and orange soup is a firm favourite with my guests.

I own 'Please Don't Feed The Bears' and 'The Kundalini Yoga Cookbook' and , ok, any book would struggle to compare with those greats, but this is a run of the mill, boring book. And the others were half the price too !

This book had promise, but, many of the ingredients in particular the soy-based ones, are unavailable (in south-east Ireland anyway). We love Italian food, but cannot eat dairy products and were hoping this would give us inspiration! But it all boils down to just using fresh, natural ingredients and leaving out the cheese and sauces - until someone can write a book with rich, yummy, dairy-free recipes. Disappointed - it will be gathering dust in the kitchen

If I was only allowed to have one cookbook this would be the one. The recipes are consistent and reliable although perhaps a little more time-consuming than in some other cookbooks. The extra trouble is however well worth it: the dishes are delicious - interesting and subtle, with layers of different tastes. I have been making some of the recipes for years and yet nobody has got tired of them yet. For a while it seemed to be hard to get this book so it's nice to see that it is available again.

My partner became vegan and I was worried I would not be able to make cakes etc. No worries with this book. The double choc pecan brownies (and variations) are out of this world - you would not know they are dairy free and this is now a regular birthday treat. The muffins are light and moist - better than the shop versions. Using fruit and veg to make lovely moist bakes. When we could not find organic chocolate soya dessert commercially, we used the recipe for the cream to use in sandwich cakes and now my partner prefers that to the commercial soya dessert that is back in the shops. So easy to make, he does it himself. NB the recipe for cornbread may have a little too much baking soda - we found it inedible, so made a wee adjustment. ... Read More:

I found this book originally in my local library and having read it for five minutes decided I had to go out and buy a copy! It is simply the best vegan cookbook I have ever found. This is probably because I am the only vegan in the household and so the amounts given in the book are perfect - they really are the right amount. However my housemates, who are all meateaters, were also pleasantly surprised when I cooked them a recipe from the book! My advice is especially try the scrambled tofu and leek. Yummy!
