The book is well set-out and the introductory chapter tells you how much is one portion of fruit and/ or vegetables. (One star awarded for this!) Armed with this knowledge, I set out to increase my fruit and veg. consumption.......... However, many of the recipes included are, unless you are a complete beginner, pretty much well known and hardly improve on one's intake of fruit and vegetables. I also presumed that the number of portions of fruit/ vegetables per serving of each recipe would be given, (not unlike calorie-counted recipes) but one is left to work this out for oneself. I found out why...... For example, included is a recipe for lemon meringue pie, which is not exactly going to increase one's fruit ... Read More:

The 'Mediterranean meets Asia' tag had me hooked at once - I thought I'd found my ideal cookery book. However, I found I really could not get on with this one at all. I found the recipes fiddly [ and I do not think I am a lazy cook ] and they frequently did not live up to their promise. I actually culled the book in a couple of months- a first for me. I have since bought two excellent books by Claudia Roden: Arabesque and The Book of Jewish food. Although not vegetarian, I have got far more use out of them, and would recommend those to anyone with an interest in Middle Eastern cookery.

I tried several recipes in this book and I was pretty dissappointed with all of them. I brought this book so that I could make vegan treats for some friends. The bronwie that I made fromt he book tasted like earthy soil. I wouldn't reccomend this book. Sarah Kramer's Vegan books are better.

A very clearly presented and illustrated book explaining the basic principles of Ayurveda. The recipies are divided into three sections, so that having completed the 'self test' to discover your body type, you can then choose from over 70 delicious recipies. These include non vegetarian recipies, all of which are very simple to prepare from ingredients which are readily available. An excellent introduction to Ayurveda - 'the science of life'.

This book is terrible (why doesn't Amazon let you give something 0 stars?!). Knowing famous people and having been to expensive doctors/therapists does not qualify you to write a book about organic principles. I can't believe anyone agreed to publish this load of tripe. They clearly didn't spend much money on proofreading/editing, either, and the layout means the whole thing is even more wasteful than it would have been anyway. Avoid!

Mr Salloum obviously has a great love of and knowledge of the cuisines that he presents. There are fascinating personal stories and historical snippets. The art work is beautiful and all the recipes sound mouthwatering. I really could not resist making 'gazelles ankles' just for the bizarre name. They were easy to make, delicious but just a tad too sweet for my palate. The story attached by Mr Salloum made a great introduction to my work colleagues when I made the ankles to take to a meeting at work. I thoroughly recommend this book.

I had the good fortune to eat at the Candle Café while holidaying in New York. It was one of the most interesting meals I had there and something of an eye-opener for the possibilities of vegan food. I bought the book on the strength of the two meals I had at the restaurant. The book, like the restaurant, is full of inspiration and it certainly gives the information to recreate the food. However, to follow these recipes you will need to be able to get hold of some ingredients which you won't find on the supermarket shelves. If you're in the UK you'll also have to put some thought into where you can make substitutions when it comes to specific sauces and spices.
