Are we really supposed to believe that Jame Oliver wrote 'At last, a simple and accessible guide which makes the massive world of wine seem smaller and more approachable.'Come on Hamish?!?

This book is an obvious attempt to cash in on the 'foodie' revolution. Hamish Anderson does not make the world of wine seem smaller and more approachable.

As a student of wine I suggest people wanting to understand the subject read Jancis Robinsons Wine Course.

Leonard S. Bernstein shares "snobbish" information without insisting we be a wine snob. As a collector of wine books, I found Bernstein's book one of my all time favorites. He is masterful in weaving personal experiences with bits and pieces of useful wine information. I will give this book as a gift to many of my "co-tasters".

Food and Drink : Wines of California (Mitchell Beazley Pocket Guides)
Maybe one shouldn't say so, but this is exactly the kind of guide to Californian wines that I, as a European, have been waiting for. Those who are fed up with James Laube's "More, more, more" will find this book refreshing and balanced as well as stimulating. Brook manages to be both enthusiastic and critical at the same time, and the book is as thorough as the best Faber & Faber regional guides. The only minus is the maps. For instance, the two Sonoma maps don't really make sense unless you know how they fit together. Then again, I suppose most people who are likely to buy this book, already have a proper wine atlas.

Similarly I felt compelled to add my thoughts based on the very negative review above and my very positive impression of this book !

This book certainly isn't an all-encompassing text detailing every nuance of food and wine pairing, but rather an easy-going and refreshingly upbeat and unpretentious guide/overview to give enthusiasts ideas that they can build upon. The respective personalities of Mark Hix and Malcolm Gluck really come through, adding to the enjoyable personalised style and make this a nice change from more formal `text-books'.

The recipes are on-the-whole straight forward and appealing; easy enough to not require days of planning but with enough challenge to keep you interested. The wine matching is clear ... Read More:

If you don't know anything about wine then this is for you. If you know a little about wine and would like to know a little more then this is also for you. It takes you from getting to know how to taste the wines, how to serve them and with what kind of food you should eat with them and a whole lot more. The book is full of illustrations and can be picked up and put down at anytime and you can just pick up where you left off or just flick through the book to area that are of interest. Joanna Simon has made a very good job at explaining such a complicated subject - buy this book and you wont be disappointed

Food and Drink : CAMRA's Good Cider Guide
Though a great idea in principle, this guide is so selective and incomplete that you'll find more pubs that sell decent cider by looking in the Good Beer Guide.

The editor takes a very purist attitude, disqualifying ciders which do not meet exacting standards of production - even though they are a million miles away from the Strongbows and Dry Blackthorns of this world. This means that many towns and cities simply don't have any pubs listed, even though there may be a pub there selling Weston's Stowford Press or Thatcher's Farmers Tipple, neither of which qualify.

The research also seems very scanty: I could name several pubs near my home which sell good cider but aren't listed here.

Interesting as a list of pubs to ... Read More:
