Wechsberg's book is an established classic on a par with those of A. J. Liebling and Waverly Root. Like those other authors, Wechsberg was a journalist who wrote about food, restaurants, and food cultures in the mid-20th century, and his insights and great storytelling give the writing a permanent appeal. This can be seen from the reaction after this essay collection (whose chapters were originally written as magazine articles) appeared in this reprint edition in the mid-1980s. I was at a Christmas party with some accomplished food folks, including Paul Bertolli of the Chez Panisse in Berkeley, and was recounting to someone one of the stories ("Tafelspitz for the Hofrat") from this book. When I finished I found that most ... Read More:

Food and Drink : Chow! Venice: Savoring the Food and Wine of La Serenissima: Savouring the Food and Wine of La Serenissima a Guide to the Restaurants and Bars in Venice
If you only take one guidebook to Venice, make sure it's this one. We took the 1st Edition along on our first trip to Venice last year and it changed a good holiday into an amazing experience.
There is a mouth-watering introductory section with guidance on what specialities to look out, very useful for a first timer. The main section reviews recommended bars, cafes and restaurants, usefully divided into geographical areas so you can easily plan an itinerary to fit in with sight-seeing. The enthusiasm of the authors for good food and for the city of Venice shines through on every page.
The reviews of bars and restaurants are completely honest and reliable, not only for the quality of food but also for the ambience and helpfulness of ... Read More:

Food and Drink : Wine Tasting (Teach Yourself)
This book deserves to become a classic in its genre, and should be standard in the increasing number of wine tasting classes all over the English-speaking world. It's ideal for the beginner,at leats for me, it explains all the basics and destroys a few myths about how to treat your wine. There are checklists for winetasters and a reading list for further study.
The book is built up round 10 "lessons" each looking at one category of wine, 9 of them table wines, for example one on oak-influenced white wines. You can pick up a good deal of information about the characteristics of wines here, but there are sections describing the most basic ones in the first chapter.
The book has some good coloured photos, many just of the fruit types represented ... Read More:

Food and Drink : The Wild Bunch : Great Wines From Small Producers
This is an interesting read especially for those of us concerned to ensure that the advance of "industrial" wine producers and multinational corporations does not swamp and overwhelm the skills, individuality and commitment of that keen band of winemakers who are passionate about the produce of their vineyards and who want to retain wines which do not fall into easy classifications, nor necessarily "easy" or unchallenging drinking.

I have both this and the 3rd edition, and I would strongly recommend you to have a recent copy in your collection, but not to rush out and buy the new edition every time it appears. The 3rd edition had >1,000 pages and this one >1,600 pages, I suppose the next edition will have >2,000 pages - which ever way you look at it, it's fantastic value for money in terms of /kg. I know that much is said for and against Parker, but the point-rating system and the well-written text makes it an interesting and useful book. I have read some reviews that praise Parker for opening up new wine producing areas, new markets, and new tasting options. Other reviews condemn him for pushing for one type of taste and for inflating prices. I look at what the book gives me. Firstly, ... Read More:
