Oz Clarke tells it like it is & thankfully seems to respect his reader regardless of whether they know their Pouilly Fume from Pouilly Fuisse.

If you're planning to stock up & take a foray into the wonderful world of (decent) wine, this is as good a starting point as any. However, if you're looking to do some research for wine exams or use as a reference book, then there are other, more weighty tomes out there which do a more exact job.

But, back to the book in hand. This books has interesting Food/Wine notes & also a decent synopsis of the various countries of origin. The A-Z of wines, grapes etc is pretty good & although there are perhaps a few missing (if you're feeling particularly pernickety)isn't ... Read More:

The 'Wine Diet' is an interesting and worthwhile addition to the multitude of diet books that abound nowadays. Diet books that are fairly often of dubious quality, but not this one. Prof. Roger Corder, an expert researcher in cardiovascular health in relation to wines, gives very practical advise on the best red wines to choose for vascular health effects. Of course wine consumption is needed in moderation (max. 1-2 glasses a day) and preferably with food.
His book is especially relevant for the prevention and treatment of the many modern chronic diseases with a strong endothelial dysfunction component of the vessels, like coronary heart disease, diabetes etc.
Corder recommends in particular the traditional Madiran wines in South ... Read More:

I was just browsing in my local bookshop under the "Cooking-category". I came across Elizabeth DAVID's 'IS THERE A NUTMEG IN THE HOUSE" by accident. I bought the book straight away, and I can't put down the book.

I had tried Pastenak (pasnips) and cress cream soup. Spicy lentils soup is just delicious! And, the spiced prunes!!! hmmm.....

One of new year's resolution is to eat healthily, more vegetables and fruits!! I know I can do it this time. :) Whats so AWESOME is the introduction of new ways of cooking veg (eg parsnips - which I normally roasted them) and simple and clear instructions.

Funny and witty delivery! Thoroughly enjoyed the book.

I have also bought "French Provincial Book", ... Read More:

Let me use that old cliche, if you only buy one book on home wine-making then buy this one.

I have seven books on making wine. This is the one I always turn to first and the only one I have read cover to cover.

It is very readable, the only winemaking book I have with a sense of humour. It covers almost everything you could want. From the real basics, to really quite advanced stuff. It even has a potted history of winemaking.

But most of all the recipes never cease to turn out top notch wine, from bog-standard apple through unusual ones like kiwi to the use of herbs and spices.

Oh and don't be put off by the fact that it is of American origin. This usual puts me right off this kind of book. Not in this case though.

This book effortlessly combines the serious business of philosophy with the equally important subject of wine (important that is to lovers of wine!).

The book takes the form of a series of essays by both masters of wine and masters of philosophy. The essay format makes the book accessible and easy to dip into whether you are an amateur philosopher or an enthusiastic oenophile. The format also allows a wide spectrum of subjects to be covered from the philosophical question of whether taste can be objective (see the essay written by the book's editor, Barry Smith) to the science behind how the brain processes sensations of taste and smell (an admirably lucid article by Jamie Goode who is both a biochemist and a wine writer).

A perfect present ... Read More:

C J J Berry was a master on winemaking. I have bought and read most books on winemaking. This is the one I always turn back to. If you have to buy one book on homewinemaking this is the one! He begins my explaining the concepts and techniques of winemaking in easy to understand terms. He also explains the science behind the process but he is never confusing or condescending. I have never come across a problems which has not been solved by his troubleshooting section and his procedures are comprehensive but easy to follow. The remainder of the book takes you through a wine making year with suggestions, recipies and leaves you confident enough to experiment successfully. All recipes are in metric, imperial and US measures. He leaves you feeling that country wines ... Read More:

The high quality patisseries of Paris are an extraordinary visual treat and their patisserie would be a deadly addiction were it not so rich (and expensive). Unless you employ help in the kitchen, this book should be viewed as a tour of the top Paris cake shops rather than a recipe book . In trying to recreate the gateaux in this book you might lose the will to live. Home bakery is for me half the fun of creation and half the fun seeing it disappear but this book is about art.
I've also long held the suspicion that some of the awe inspiring creations are given stability and attenuation of taste by the inclusion of tallow, just as they use lard in their best croissants I think certain all butter patisserie could collapse under its own weight or leave you with heartburn. ...
