Johnson clearly knows his stuff and he covers the world of wine pretty well given that this is a pocket-sized edition. The book was too compact for me though and I think it suffers from too many abbreviations and too many bullet-point entries. I accept that your expectations shouldn't be too high if you are buying a compendium, as compromises do need to be made. For me, however, it was slightly difficult to find my way around and get the best out of what the book has to offer. It must also be said that the editing and proof-reading were well below expectations and, indeed, very disappointing. Andrew Jefford is a brilliant wine writer and in this latest work, he offers his take on the 'welcome to wine' kind of book. Because it's Jefford, it's somewhat more than a 'here are the basics'. So I would say it's ideal for the person who's got some clue as to what differences might be: i.e. already knows that Burgundy hosts the pinot noir graple, but probably couldn't tell you that the Northern Rhone grapes are different from the southern Rhone. I, for one, found it excellent. He starts with a basic definition of wine in six words: "the fermented juice of fresh grapes" and then goes into three processes towards flavour: grapes (e.g. describing the characteristics both of classics like merlot and of minor grapes like cinsault); ... Although this book was republished in 2006, the material has not apparently been updated and still relates to when it was originally published in 2003. Although interesting, I would have thought that with a book as expensive as this, the author could have brought it more up to date when it was republished. A poor buy.

This book is brilliant on so many levels that it's hard to know where to start. First up, it operates as a guide to French wine. It explains French wine law (why labels on wine tell you what they do), it gives you vintages assessments for every region in recent years, and it lists recommended producers from every region in France (and even which within their range are worth trying). The information here will bypass absolute beginners, but will still please a broad range of people, from those with just a drop of knowledge to geniune connoisseurs. Second, it is a wonderful evocation of France. Time and again, descriptions of scenes and moments drip with atmosphere: Jefford's witty, eloquent prose is a pleasure to read. This is not a bad guide, but nothing amazing. It is a little let down by a poor layout design, which makes it quite hard to read - it is disappointing that a book like this couldn't include more labels and images. Also, it is unexpected that there is no full colour printing! There a few good finds in the book - the best thing is that it is quite easy to find majority of the wines in particular supermarkets and the average cost of the wines are definitely cheap. At a guess I would say about over half would be around the £4-7 mark. There aren't many 'fine wines' in the book, but it is definitely good for a few supermarket bargains.
