Food and Drink : Essential Winetasting
Without a doubt the best wine book I have seen. Superbly laid out with easy to follow references. This book teaches practical knowledge on every page which comes to life in step by step tasting experiences. Michael Schuster has a great knack of bringing enjoyment to this art. The first book I have read that explains why a certain wine matches a certain food. I just want to read, learn and taste more.

Food and Drink : Manchester on a Plate: New Recipes from Manchester's Finest Chefs

I bought this book simply because the title appealed to me and I had been to Manchester a few times. Oh and I love reading and trying new recipes so I thought what the heck.

On first flick through I thought it was a bit daunting as the recipes really do appear to be restaurant quality. However, I did try out a few to try and impress my new husband and I have to admit that they were such a success that I have been back to it several times and am now going to buy the other books in the series! Enjoy!

I bought this book for my husband shortly before we started planning a series of wine-themed holidays and it's been a great planning tool. It has a good mix of vineyards, bars, musuems, shops, etc and includes some interesting "wine facts" along the way. Price guides are in dollars, but it's not a great hindrance to the UK reader. It also includes some of the less obvious wine regions (the UK, for example) and covers the more obvious ones in sufficient details.

REAR COVER QUOTE from JANE GRIGSON:-
"Every time we begin to feel fussed by the cookery elaborators with their flashy tricks and colour photos, we can restore confidence by returning to Elizabeth David."
From Artemis Cooper's 'Writing at the Kitchen Table', pg 307 - 'An Omelette and a Glass of Wine' delighted Elizabeth's legion of fans. Jane Grigson praised it for including all the dishes most closely associated with her, Spiced Beef, Salted Welsh Duck and Syllabub.

This is a very good effort to cover a lot about wine in one volume.Parker does have individual books available on bordeaux;burgundy;rhone;etc that are even more detailed and this volume is a compendium of parts of these individual volumes. As in any such endeavour there is no doubt that much has to be left out to give the purchaser an even chance of having a book that is liftable, and others have pointed out some examples of omissions. But frankly, this book covers the most popular zones and the most typical wine choices one is confronted with.Sauternes (which is sacrificed) accounts for only an infinitesmal part of the wine trade. And no one other than the Brits drinks S.A. wines-so no great loss here either. What remains is a very good reference book that ...
