Lonely Planet guides belong in every backpacker's backpack, every traveler's suitcase, every armchair traveler's bookcase as they give travelers of every stripe, the real deal and the wannabes, accurate and in depth information in an easy to find format and they don't read like they were written by somebody who failed creative writing. Not only do they give you the info you need to find what you're looking for, but they make it interesting as well.

I have twenty something Lonely Planet Guides and I've been to maybe a third of the places they represent. I have been to Italy, but that was years ago. I went with my parents on a tour bus through Europe. You know one of those "If it's Tuesday, it must be Belgium," kind of tours. I travel ... Read More:

The problem with making a guide for the whole country is that is impossible to include all the information you need in one book ( otherwise it will be very big)

Italy needs a guide for each region as the culture ,cuisine and art changes greatly from place to place.

This guide covers mostly the main cities and the most important attractions but detail is lost when exploring the country side.

I prefer to have a lot of detail information about an specific place ( what is the best restaurant in village X ) and local tips.

The road map is accurate and the price list is sadly up to date.

This was a very pleasurable book to read. Not a great work of literature and the rather naive style of writing occasionally irritated me, but it was enjoyable. The plot was clever and kept me guessing right until the end... well nearly to the end. Not an emotional roller coaster, page turner of a book and I did not find it difficult to put down but I was always pleased to pick it up again. The characters were lightly drawn and rather stereotyped. They are not the sort that I think many people would feel a bond with, a definite riches to riches story but it was interesting and well worth buying for a happy, easy holiday read.

This is a must read for anyone seeking to understand what's going on in Italy today. It provides a wealth of information about Italy's recent history, which helps enlighten the dumbstruck among us. The message, which is more like "they-have-always-been-corrupt", and "no-crime-will-ever-go-punished", fits perfectly with the state of current affairs, and shows that the present, rather than being an aberration, is but a logical conclusion to the past. Unlike the "grandmama's-pasta-is-fantastic" books, this one shows the flip side of the coin, which anyone seriously interested in Italy would like to comprehend.

Already an owner of 101 Beautiful Towns - Arts & Crafts, I was thrilled to receive this beautiful book as a gift (from my wish list!). It's an absolute joy to sit and browse through and admire the wonderful photographs and descriptions of the italian delicacies and where they are made. If ever I needed an excuse to return to Italy it will be to search out these gastronomic delights as well as to visit so many beautiful places. This book is top quality and also has a very useful index at the back listing the different hotels, restaurants and shops for enjoying these specialities. A must for all italy lovers.

What a superb book, for all Italophiles like myself. It follows the series perfectly. If you missed it on TV - you can also buy the series off Amazon! Wonderful photographs, this book was highly influential in deciding our holidays this year, when we visited Italy and Sicily. Francesco is such a fine example of Italians, passionate, enthusastic and charming, he makes you want to pack up and move to Italy!

I bought this, the ninth and most recent edition (2009) for two reasons: one, it had a photo of our island's main attraction - the Castello Aragonese of Ischia - on the front cover (rather kindly, as we're practically invisible to most visitors to Italy) and two, because our old copy (the 5th edn, 2001) was due for replacement.

But - that photo apart - what a disappointment!

Aside from the addition of a few pages of mainly generic and inconsequential photos, and the few pounds' worth of phonecalls that presumably went into checking dates, times, prices etc, what's changed?

Well, even though it costs £3 more, there appear to be some 56 fewer pages of text - although those that there are have a pleasanty airy feeling as ... Read More:

"Desiring Italy" became my inseparable travelling companion across Italy, after I found it by chance at a Roman bookstore. Not only it suggests special places to visit that are not always listed in traditional guides, it also makes them alive through their portrayal by literary masters (all women) that add their elegance, their sensitivity, their intelligence to that of the readers'. An added bonus was that I got to make their literary works real in my mind by following the steps of the characters in these magnificent settings (as Dorothea in "Middlemarch", for example).

I tried this as a change from Lonely Planet and I must say, I am absolutely disgusted at it. There is lazy research through out and innaccurate descriptions of many places that do not reflect how lovely some locations are or give an indication of what you can actually do there. I guess this is just literally for the interrailler market and as of such it is very superficial.

I have just finished reading this book for the 3rd time, and am sure I will be reading it again soon. Adamoli is a great writer and you really feel as though you are in the beautiful seaside village with her. You are there when she discovers it, and you are there years later when the tourist trade is taking over.
She also has a little reciepe at the start of each chapter which is a nice idea! If you love reading books about Italy but are sick of the 'Under the Tuscan Sun' type books then this is for you!
