My step father was an Italian restauranteur and had a copy of this same book in Italian throughout his career. He even had it rebound a few years back. During his life he ran a hotel in Rome and cooked for cardinals that came there from the vatican using recipes from the Silver spoon.

I was therefore thrilled when this came out in English and so far have bought 3 copies so that both my daughters have them for their homes. They use them daily. Not only is this the authentic cookery book for Italian food lovers it is amazingly economical, utilising seasonal fresh foods and not that many ingredients unlike so many newer recipes.

Risotto with carrots for example is fantastically creamy as the carrot is pureed. Highly ... Read More:

Have just bought this for a family trip to Italy in a few weeks.

This CD is great, very attractive to listen to - rather than a chore (my wife enjoyed listening to it compared to other ones shw would ask me to turn off!)

Production is great, background music is very good and really adds to the experience, but the way it gives and then breaks down phrases that you are very likely to use gets you using words and phrases straightaway. I would consider using EarWorm again (e.g. for French)

This is a good guide book, as all the guide books in the series, but I did expect a bit more from it. I travelled around Italy together with my husband the summer of 2005, and we used this guide book a lot. But it is a guide book, nothing more. There are quite a bit of things that have changed since the book was last edited, but this is expected. We are planning to send the findings we did to the editor, so that it can be added or changed in the next edition, perhaps.
We felt that the book focused too much on churches, castles etc, and a lot of really interesting things were missed - like the local food markets, which we love to visit. There wasn't much of "different" or "special" recommendations, it was just focusing on the "What to see if you are a tourist", ... Read More:

Having been amazed at the food at Montali over a number of years, we always hoped Malu and Alberto would write a book - and I'm so glad they have. Malu's style of vegetarian cooking is truly brilliant and worthy of Michelin stars. The book itself is lovely and beautifully laid out, giving you a real insight in to the place as well as the food. I have found the recipes easy to follow with fabulous results, and no wonder, they trialed the recipes for 2 years to check they could be replicated at home. I've already given the book to friends as gifts - meat eaters or not - they all love it. Good luck with the book Alberto and Malu - I hope it brings you the recognition you deserve!

James Holland's generosity of spirit and indefatiguable labour has created one of the best general histories I've read recently--and there's a lot of stiff competition about. As well as using writen sources, Holland personally interviewed survivors from all sides of the conflict; Germans, Poles, Canadians, Britons, Americans, Italian partisans and fascists. These accounts give a vivid picture of the heroism and brutality of war, and instil a sense of sympathy for (almost) all of the participants. Their stories are skillfully blended into the larger narrative, which explains what happened, and why the major players (Alexander, Mark Clark, Kesselring, Churchill, Roosevelt, Mussolini, etc) made crucial decisions. Holland is immenently fair-minded; the controversy surrounding ... Read More:

I bought this book to read on holiday and, had it not been the only novel I took with me, I would not have persevered. The story is all right, and just about worth plodding through, and the flavour suitably Italian, but the style? Oh dear! I found the writing style and use of vocabulary poor and ponderous. Instead of sharing this book with my group of friends, as we generally do with novels we have enjoyed, I left it in a hotel in Italy - not worth bringing home! I shall not be tempted by any other novels by this author, when there are so many others who write better.

I thought this was a very long winded and boring book that seemed to go nowhere. It is only the second book i have been totally disgusted with in all my years of reading. Simply terrible.
