I bought this item in spite of the slating it got from the first review, and am very glad that I did. The objections seem pretty trivial ones (although if you have painted your entire kitchen black and it has no windows or electric lights, you may want to opt for a different model as the display will be hard to read). The first, and most obvious, bonus is the design. It looks far classier than most kitchen scales, and comes with a very sturdy stainless steel bowl. It feels like a high-quality item, and is nice and compact. The display is excellent - the screen is transparent and because it's separate from the base it is larger and far easier to read. I've had these scales for around 2 years. In the last month the digits on the LCD screen are starting to fail - some of them not appearing making guessing the weight a challenge! Even when new the scales had some issues. Every so often when turned on they would display random digits. Only way to fix was to turn the scale off and then on again. I suspect it's a glitch in the computer software of the scales. If you're looking for scales that last more than a few years then don't buy these!

I would not recommend this timer unless you specifically need the flashing-lights warning. The timer is billed as being for the "hard of hearing", so I bought it expecting the alarm to be very loud - but it isn't. My hearing is fine but I wanted a timer that I could use in the kitchen and still hear while I was upstairs: you are lucky if you can hear this one in the next room! Other downsides are the membrane buttons that are hard to press - you really need to use both hands to operate them: one to hold the timer, and the other to press the button.
