I have read a good number of the guidebooks to the Languedoc Roussillon region and this is my favourite. While relatively compact and light, it packs in plenty of information and the recommendations on places to go and see are both helpful and reliable. Best of all, it's written with enthusiasm and an eye for the small details that make for holiday highlights.

The book opens with photographic highlights of the region accompanied by quotes from travellers about their experience in those destinations. It gives you an immediate taste for what the region has to offer and a hankering to visit. There are then a number of suggested routes and highlights, which are very helpful when planning your trip (including recommendations for ... Read More:

We are holidaying in this region for the first time this year & wanted as much info as we could get. Encouraged by previous reviewa we ordered & were delighted, on receipt, to find it just as we had hoped. We now have every expectation of making the most of the oportunities available in what appears to be a delightful area.

I'm in the process of planning a trip to the Languedoc and I've been reading several guides to the region. This is not a terrible guide, but it's the one I liked the least.

This book would be good if you already know exactly where you want to go and what you want to do. For example, there is plenty of specific information on things like opening hours and places to stay. It's very well researched. But if you're earlier in the planning stages than that, it doesn't really do it. The chapters leap about from place to place and it gets confusing trying to work out where they are in relation to one another. Moreover, nowhere sounds particularly enticing! (Apart from Montpellier: clearly a favorite of the author). Several towns that are ... Read More:

The paper maps from Michelin are excellent. However I have bought, in France, the Michelin non-tear map at a very similar price as these are far more robust for opening and refolding and keeping in the glovebox or car door pocket.
I do not have a copy to hand but believe that the scale is slightly less but still very detailed. The overall map area is slightly larger than the paper map (probably due to the small difference in scale).
I have now switched to using these non-tear maps for day to day usage.

As with most Michelin Green Guides this one is most difficult to find your way around until you are well used to it. Once you've sussed it and adapted the search to your own circumstances. it's not too bad. It's a very comprehensive guide with great features and is a worthy addition to the many other Green Guides I have.

However, I bought the Languedoc Rousillon Tarn Gorges guide mainly for one purpose - to glean more information on the fantastic Millau Bridge that crosses the Tarn. I hope to visit soon (note "visit" and not "cross"!!!!). My information taken from the Amazon listing was that the guide was the 5th edition published in January 2008, although I confess that I can find no confirmation of this in the guide itself. ... This is easily the most feeble of all the many Rough Guides I have used while abroad. If the author did all the research and writing on his own, than that's a mistake which shows. He's clearly uninterested in art (viz. cursory descriptions of Musee Fabre in Montpellier and Musee Goya at Castres), so someone who is interested should have been employed to help him out.

There are glaring omissions - the rural area around the Herault Valley is fascinating and offers lots of walking possibilities, and there should have been clear advice on where the best beaches are on the Languedoc Coast in the Montpellier-Narbonne-Beziers sector; Catlos more or less dismisses this whole littoral, which is wrong, as there are a few nice, uncrowded places ...
